Job Title: Behavioral Health Technician (Mental Health Aide)
Location: Syracuse, NY
Duration: 14 Weeks
Schedule: Day Shift
- 2 Days: 7:00 AM – 7:30 PM (12-hour shifts)
- 2 Days: 7:00 AM – 3:00 PM (8-hour shifts)
- Every Other Weekend Required
Hours: 40 Hours Per Week
We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Behavioral Health Technician to support patients within an inpatient psychiatric and behavioral health setting. This role provides both direct and indirect patient care while working closely with nursing and interdisciplinary healthcare teams to promote patient safety, emotional well-being, and therapeutic recovery.
The ideal candidate will possess strong communication skills, excellent organizational abilities, and a genuine commitment to supporting individuals experiencing mental health challenges.
ResponsibilitiesPatient Care & Support- Provide direct and indirect care to patients in a behavioral health environment.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene and basic care needs.
- Develop therapeutic relationships with patients under the supervision of nursing staff.
- Interact therapeutically with patients during daily activities and treatment programs.
- Orient newly admitted patients to unit routines, policies, and expectations.
- Obtain and document vital signs accurately.
- Complete admission-related documentation and patient assessments as assigned.
- Assist healthcare providers during patient examinations when appropriate.
- Collect and process specimens according to established procedures.
- Monitor and document patient intake and output.
- Transport patients safely throughout the facility as needed.
- Maintain a safe and secure therapeutic environment.
- Conduct routine patient safety checks and observations.
- Recognize behavioral changes and promptly communicate relevant information to nursing staff.
- Intervene appropriately during crisis situations under established protocols and supervision.
- Apply age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate clinical and psychological interventions.
- Accurately document patient observations and care activities.
- Communicate patient information to nursing staff in a timely and professional manner.
- Maintain confidentiality and comply with organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
- Work collaboratively with nurses, physicians, therapists, and other healthcare professionals.
- Participate in patient care activities and support treatment goals.
- Attend required meetings, training sessions, and educational programs.
- High School Diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience working with psychiatric or behavioral health patients preferred.
- Experience within an inpatient psychiatric, mental health, or healthcare setting within the last two years is highly desirable.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
- Basic knowledge of medical terminology.
- Ability to establish therapeutic rapport with patients.
- Ability to remain calm and professional during crisis situations.
- Strong observation and critical-thinking skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
- Successful completion of pre-employment health screening and clearance.
- Ability to work every other weekend as scheduled.
- Commitment to maintaining patient dignity, safety, and confidentiality.
- Inpatient Behavioral Health / Psychiatric Care Setting.
- Direct patient interaction with individuals experiencing mental health and behavioral health conditions.
- Collaborative, multidisciplinary treatment environment focused on patient recovery and safety.
