Residential Camp Nurse Position at Camp Harkness
The Residential Camp Nurse at Camp Harkness must be an RN and would stay on the property from Monday 12pm through Friday 3pm. Job duties include medication administration, first aid, responding to urgent/emergent issues, and overseeing the general health and wellness of the camp program for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. Housing and three meals a day are provided. Scheduled breaks from 10am to 12pm provided at beautiful Seaside setting Monday through Thursday. Break also from 2pm to 4pm Monday through Thursday. The Residential Nurse is a seasonal salary-based position. Will be responsible for all aspects of nursing care, medications, and implementing agency policies and procedures to ensure the safety and wellbeing of participants. Will provide first aid, medication administration, camper health assessment, and emergency care to campers. She/he will ensure compliance with all state and regulatory reporting requirements. Will present staff in-services relating to medications and nursing issues.
Schedule:
Duty begins at 12pm on Mondays and will end at 3pm on Fridays (6-week program)

Salary Information:
$15,000 as bi-weekly installments throughout the 6-week period.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
- Minimum of 3-5yrs exp. in a clinical setting, preferably serving individuals with developmental and physical disabilities.
- Experienced with Department of Developmental Services regulations, forms, and protocols.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office suit.
- Current State of CT RN License.
- The Nurse must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
- Will be required to participate in lifts, transfers, and behavioral or physical intervention during emergency situations.
- May be exposed to the risk of injury or exposure to occupational health hazards.
Essential Functions:
- Review all medical paperwork to ensure completeness of forms
- Assist in preparation of Kardexes, Health Checklists, Narcotic Count sheets, Seizure Records, Glucose monitoring and other medical documentation.
- Provide staff training including Blood borne pathogens, direct care, medical needs, food consistency, seizures, allergies, asthma, and Epi-pen administration.
- Intake all camper medication on registration day- checks labels to ensure medications match Dr's orders on file- ensure accuracy of printed Kardexes- follow up with physicians as needed if discrepancies noted. Monitor medication supplies and notify care providers if additional medications are needed.
- Monitor PRN medications for adequate supply and expiration dates
- Confer with care provider in specific needs of campers
- Arrange and organize medication cabinet
- Arrange and organize topical bins of medications approved to be administered by non-certified personnel and orient staff on proper administration.
- Provide a list of campers scheduled to receive medication at each interval
- Pour and Pass medications at each interval according to Med Admin procedures
- Document med pass in camper Kardex following each interval
- Complete count sheets for controlled drugs according to medication administration procedures
- Provide medical assessment for campers and staff (first aid/health conditions) and document in bound nursing log
- Provide first aid to campers and staff as necessary
- Provide emergency treatment- assess campers ability to remain at camp following injury or illness
- Consult with camp physicians as needed to treat camper health conditions that arise during session
- Consult with individuals primary care physicians as needed
- Monitor completion of daily health checklists (completed by counselors)
- Provide a copy of camper medical documentation to care providers
- Return unused medication to care provider at the close of the session.
- Supervise shift nurses and certified unlicensed staff.
- Provide overnight on-call coverage (on premises). Will respond to emergencies throughout the night.
- Ensures infection control procedures.
Expectations:
- Ensures confidentiality as required by law and the Arc and DDS policies and procedures which includes keeping records, conversations, correspondence (regarding program participants and staff) confidential.
- Maintains a mature and positive attitude when dealing with program participants, staff, families, the public, and outside representatives.
- Advocates for and protects participants' rights in accordance with Arc policies and procedures.
- Treats all individuals in an age appropriate manner, with respect and dignity, and to encourage opportunities that promote choice.
- Carries out all job responsibilities in a professional manner.
- Attends weekly staff meetings.
- Will begin duty at 12pm on Mondays and end 3pm on Fridays
- Will report concerns to Supervisors in a timely manner
- Will follow camp dress code
- Reports to Deputy Chief Quality Assurance of Health Services for emergencies and global health and safety concerns
