ATTENDING PHYSICIAN XII – PLASTIC SURGERY Job Number: 00139077 Job Summary The Attending Physician is responsible for maintaining a productivity standard of at least four to five clinical days per week, 2080 hours and full-time status. The physician participates in the on-call schedule as specified by the Division and/or Department Chairs, provides close supervision of all house staff to ensure quality care, and evaluates resident surgeons as directed by the Division Chair to fulfill Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requirements. The physician participates in the education of medical students, physician assistant students, podiatry students, and nursing students, documents clinical activity across clinical, ward, operating room, and emergency settings, and fulfills research obligations through individual agreements with the Division Chair. The physician must obtain and/or maintain surgical privileges and remain clinically active at both John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital and Provident Hospital as directed, and must maintain certification by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and competency in Plastic Surgery to fulfill patient care responsibilities for patients treated by Cook County Health (CCH). Typical Duties Present during significant portions of every procedure performed in the operating room and the entire course of all minor procedures. Provide appropriate preoperative and postoperative evaluation of patients as required to meet standards of care. Work a minimum of four to five clinical days per week and 2080 hours per year for CCH, or the equivalent as specified by the Division Chief and Department Chair. Obtain and maintain surgical privileges and remain clinically active at Stroger Hospital and/or Provident Hospital as assigned by the Division Chief and the Department Chair. Provide minor surgical services as needed and as time permits; provide inpatient and outpatient consultations while on call. Provide diagnostic and treatment services to patients including benign and malignant disease. Share rounding responsibilities with other members of the Division such that the care of all inpatients and observation patients is supervised on a daily basis by an attending. Document attending clinical activity and supervision of surgery residents and mid-level providers including Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) and Physician Assistants (PA) in clinic, ward, operating room and emergency room including History and Physical, Preoperative Notes, Brief Post Op Notes, Operative Notes, Inpatient and Outpatient Progress Notes, Consult Notes, Discharge Summary and all required finance documentation. Respond promptly to all on-call queries from residents in situations of pressing acuity; communicate directly with other attending physicians and surgeons when communication through residents or mid-level providers may be unreliable. Communicate promptly to the Division chairman all information necessary for the creation of assignments and on-call rosters. Act with courtesy and collegiality and uphold the highest standards of professionalism in all arenas as representative of the Surgical Services as a whole. Participate in ongoing clinical trials and investigations offered in the division; participate in administrative committees servicing the department and Hospitals as schedule permits. In concert with division personnel, help develop new programs and processes that enhance patient care. As coordinated with and approved by the Division Chair and approved by the Institutional Review Board (IRB), perform research activities; follow all ethical guidelines. Engage in sufficient Continuing Medical Education to satisfy the requirement of the appropriate Board, Illinois Department of Public Health and Medical Staff by laws; attend Mortality and Morbidity conference, as well as required Division and Department meetings on a regular basis and in accordance with established attendance benchmarks. Request appropriate specialty consultations and perform inpatient rounds and required Resident teaching sessions as assigned and as clinical needs dictate. Participate in Quality Assurance activities as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Doctorate in Medicine (M.D.) or Doctorate in Osteopathic Medicine (D.O.) from an accredited college or university. Licensed as a Physician and Surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to starting employment. Must be cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment. Board Certification in Plastic Surgery or must be on a pathway leading to certification within five (5) years or terminal training. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics Current knowledge of the principles and methods of Plastic & Reconstruction Surgery to ensure quality and standards of care. Knowledge of the principles and practices of medical research to help implement clinical protocols/internal research. Knowledge of the principles and methods of training medical staff to ensure standards of care. Skill to analyze data/information accurately in order to determine and implement an effective and appropriate course of action. Skill to prepare written documents to provide information and/or direction to staff and others. Skill to communicate effectively in order to exchange and/or provide information and/or direction to staff and others. Demonstrate the ability to follow department specific work rules, hospital and personnel rules. Ability to meet requirements of on-call schedule. Demonstrate attention to detail, accuracy and precision in decision making. Ability to adhere to department policies and standards utilizing best practices and the appropriate use of the electronic health record (EHR). Ability to maintain a professional demeanor and composure when challenged. Ability to follow hospital protocol when exposed to noise, chemicals, disease, blood borne pathogens, patient violence and procedural injuries. Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, evenings and holidays as needed. Must be able to travel to work sites throughout Cook County. Ability to meet department and divisional productivity thresholds. Ability to meet appropriate confidentiality standards for protected health information (PHI). Ability to provide appropriate patient care while maintaining fiduciary responsibility to Cook County.
