Echocardiographer

The Echocardiographer is responsible for performing Transthoracic echocardiograms. They set up and assist with Transesophageal Echocardiograms. Under the direction of a trained echocardiographer, they set up and perform exercise and Dobutamine Stress Echocardiograms. They adhere to the standards set forth by the American Society of Echocardiography. This individual demonstrates increasing competency in the delivery of care to a primarily adult population. Other duties may be assigned as needed.

Required skills and experience include: One to three years of experience as a cardiac sonographer. Proficiency in performing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including but not limited to 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, Doppler, and Transesophageal echocardiograms. This is based on physician requests and in accordance with standard practices. The Echocardiographer provides echocardiography service at various locations. They work variable shifts, weekends, and provide emergent call coverage as scheduled. The role requires operating equipment necessary to perform all required procedures. Optimal images are obtained using ancillary devices such as selected transducers, digital networking systems, and off-line analysis systems. Recognition of basic cardiac pathology is essential. The Echocardiographer analyzes the patient's medical record to obtain history and necessary information for diagnostic procedures. They prepare preliminary reports for review and interpretation by a Cardiologist, including comparisons of previous studies. Equipment maintenance is also required. They make minor adjustments and repairs, perform routine cleaning, and report any equipment malfunctions. The Echocardiographer sets up for and assists with Transesophageal Echocardiograms. They clean and sterilize TEE probes and perform leakage testing in accordance with department policies and procedures. Maintaining a clean and orderly patient care environment is crucial. Quality improvement activities are a part of the role. They evaluate procedure results for technical quality and accuracy while maintaining appropriate logs, files, and records. The Echocardiographer reviews department performance in relation to established goals and implements changes to effect outcomes. They also prepare and instruct patients pre- and post-procedure. Utilization of ultrasound contrast is done according to guidelines and policies. Understanding and explanation of potential side effects is necessary.
