Beyond the jobsite, we invest in the communities we call home, strengthening the places where we live, work, and build. \nJob Summary \nSummary \n The Engineering Manager is responsible for a defined portion of a project, and there may be more than one Engineering Manager assigned to a project. The Engineering Manager is accountable for establishing effective working relationship with client representation and managing the flow of routine information and documents with them. The Engineering Manager maintains up-to-date and accurate documents for the project, including drawings, plans, master schedule as-builts, submittals, logs, test results, etc. The Engineering Manager works closely with the Superintendent to plan and coordinate upcoming work. The Engineering Manager obtains, tracks, and expedites the delivery of equipment and materials to the site. The Engineering Manager also assists the Project Manager in monitoring the status of the project and identifying efforts to more effectively manage the project.\nThe Engineering Manager may be assigned duties and responsibilities explicitly depicted in the descriptions of other Company position titles (e.g., Project Manager, Superintendent) as required by the existence of certain circumstances (e.g., size and complexity of the project, availability of personnel, etc.).\nEssential Duties and Responsibilities include the following; however, other duties may be assigned. To be a qualified individual, an employee must be able to perform each of the essential functions of his or her job with or without a reasonable accommodation.\nSafe, Effective and Efficient Operation of the Project\n\n Managing Safety\n Knows, practices, and enforces the Company safety policies and procedures.\n Proactively motivates trade involvement in advocating project safety. Works to visibly create safe operations as a top priority at the project level. Visible as leader in safety in field.\n Knows, practices, and enforces the Company substance abuse program.\n Ensures compliance to the Company’s substance abuse program.\n Follows through on reasonable suspicion and the enforcement of the substance abuse program.\n Advises field personnel on potential risks of planned activities, e.g., crane load lift limits. Calls the Safety Department for additional expertise as needed.\n Leads and/or participates in safety meetings, as assigned by the Project Manager.\n Contributes to building a safe project site.\n Obtains safety equipment needed by personnel on the project site.\n Conducts safety inspections of the project site.\n Points out potentially unsafe conditions to the Superintendent and/or subcontractor.\n Informs the Project Manager of patterns of unsafe conditions.\n Takes appropriate action when adequate safety precautions have not been taken.\n Completes accident investigations and reports as directed by the Project Manager.\n Documents safety violations.\n\n Project Planning\n\n Maintains a master schedule of activity for the project.\n Obtains and understands the master schedule for the project. If necessary, creates the master schedule to meet the client’s timelines and the construction approach decided by the Project Manager.\n Maintains the master schedule, keeping it current with changes in the project.\n Accurately reports progress based upon the master schedule.\n Keeps the Project Manager informed of changes in the critical path. Supplies current copies of the schedule to the Superintendent, subcontractors and others as directed by the Project Manger.\n\n Project Start-Up\n\n Assists the Project Manager in setting up the office on the project site.\n Fulfills survey responsibilities as assigned.\n Establishes accounts with local suppliers, as directed.\n Develops and manages adequate commissioning & start-up plans.\n Managing Quality\n Monitors the quality of materials used in the project as well as the quality of construction and keeps the Project Manager informed.\n Conducts visual inspection of the project on a regular basis, looking for deviations from accepted construction practices and aspects of the project that will not be satisfactory to the client.\n Reviews the reports from all testing agencies and keeps the Project Manager apprised of the results. Promptly notifies the Project Manager of out-of-range results.\n Coordinates inspections with local regulatory bodies. Accompanies inspectors as required. Reviews the results of the inspection and keeps the Project Manager apprised of the results.\n Verifies conformance to specification of key materials and equipment used on the project.\n Verifies quantities of key materials (loads of sand, yards of concrete) used in the construction of the project.\n Manages the punch list process, which could include:\n Working to avoid the necessity of a punch list;\n Developing a punch list; or\n Responding to one developed by the client or A/E.\n Complies with the Company’s quality management procedures.\n Assists the Project Manager in running a smooth and coordinated project.\n Understands the Project Manager’s plan, methods and means for constructing the project. Makes input and suggestions for improvement to the Project Manager.\n Based on the schedule and direction from the Project Manger, anticipates work to be done during the next week. Obtains materials and supplies needed to implement the schedule.\n Attends and participates in the daily project meeting.\n Teams effectively with the Superintendent(s) on the project. Provides information. Raises questions. Responds to questions. Assists in solving problems and coordinating upcoming activities.\n As assigned by the Project Manager, keeps a daily log of key activities and decisions for the project.\n Keeps the Project Manager informed of progress, key events, potential problems, and exceptions to the norm.\n\n Documenting\n\n Maintains up-to-date and accurate documents for the project.\n Obtains and safely keeps a master copy of the documents for the project.\n Becomes the expert on the documents for the project; knows the documents better than anyone else assigned to the project.\n Obtains and verifies all shop drawings as assigned.\n Prepares and submits requests for information to the client’s agents.\n Prepares and submits specifications of materials and/or equipment used (i.e., submittals) to the client/client’s agent for approval.\n Maintains an up-to-date and accurate set of documents that records the project as it was constructed (i.e., as-builts). Submits the as-builts to the client/client’s agent upon completion of the project.\n Maintains proper safety records.\n Maintains quality management documentation as required.\n\nCoordinating Support Functions\n\n Coordinates activities on the project site with support functions.\n Requests and returns equipment to the Warehouse.\n Requests steel from the Fabrication Shop.\n Submits documentation to develop and support invoices to the client.\n Responds to inquiries and requests for information from the home office.\n Requests assistance from the home office as needed.\n\nClient Satisfaction with the Construction Project and Process\n\n Relating with Client\n Establishes effective working relationship with the client, client’s agents and/or client’s employees who may be on site.\n Satisfying Clients\n Responds to questions from client, client’s agent and/or client’s employees within assigned area of responsibility.\n Provides to the client, client’s agents and/or client’s employees information that will help satisfy the client and create within the client a positive construction experience with the Company.\n Coordinates project activities with counterpart, if any, in the client’s organization.\n Establishes effective working relationship with unions that work on client’s premises.\n Monitors jurisdictional issues and keeps the Project Manager apprised.\n With the Project Manager, monitors adherence to the contract. Informs the Project Manager of potential deviations from the contract.\n With the Project Manager, participates in progress reports to the client.\n At project conclusion, provides client with manuals, warranty information, spare parts and other information/materials provided by suppliers to the project.\n As required, orients the client’s maintenance personnel to the project and/or equipment.\n\nIncorporating Changes\n\n As assigned by the Project Manager, develops cost estimates to complete change orders. Documents cost estimates and reviews them with the Project Manager. Defines the impact of change orders on the project (or assigned area of the project).\n\nEffective Relationship with Subcontractors and Suppliers\n\n Managing Subcontractor Relationships\n Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with subcontractors.\n Managing Service Delivery\n Provides a copy of project specifications, drawings, and documents to the subcontractor.\n Assists in orienting subcontractors to the project. Answers questions about project documents and specifications posed by the subcontractors. As required, requests information from the client/client’s agents to respond to questions.\n Assists the Project Manager in monitoring the work of subcontractors. Records information about subcontractors in the daily log.\n In conjunction with the Project Manager, evaluates the performance of the subcontractors at the conclusion of the project.\n\nManaging Supplier Relationships\n\n Develops and maintains an effective working relationship with suppliers.\n As directed by the Project Manager establishes accounts with local suppliers for routine materials.\n\nManaging Supplier Performance\n\n Anticipates equipment, materials and supplies needed, and orders them from suppliers so they arrive just after they are needed.\n On critical items and items with a longer lead-time, tracks the delivery of these items on a regular basis from order through manufacture, shipment and delivery.\n As required, expedites items to get them on the project site when needed.\n Verifies and signs for the delivery of key items and materials. Retains packing slips and delivery tickets.\n\nEffective Financial Performance of Projects\n\n Managing Profitability\n Analyzes the project on an ongoing basis for opportunities to construct the project more efficiently while maintaining or improving quality and timeliness.\n Reviews reports on project costs. Discusses trends and ideas for managing costs with the Project Manager.\n As required, consults with estimators to understand the approach to constructing the project envisioned in developing the bid.\n\nAccounting Setup\n\n Coordinates the use of the cost codes with the Project Manager and Superintendent and others who need the information.\n As assigned, reviews timecards. Assigns or corrects cost codes as required to maintain accurate cost data.\n Counts and verifies quantities constructed for the weekly labor report. Counts and verifies quantities daily or as needed as directed by the Project Manager.\n\nBilling Clients\n\n Assembles delivery tickets and other documentation used to support invoice to the client. Submits information to Billing Department.\n\nManagement Responsibilities\n\n Manages and directs non-supervisory administrative employees at a project site as assigned.\n\nAdditional Duties and Responsibilities\n\n Models and reinforces safety as a top priority of the organization. Always wears a safety helmet and other appropriate personal protective equipment in the field.\n Meets schedules and deadlines, adheres to policies and procedures, and maintains a good attendance/tardiness record.\n Ensures client satisfaction, both internally and externally, through positive, pleasant, professional, and efficient handling of issues.\n Exercises good interpersonal skills by gladly assisting others to accomplish work of the organization, even if it is outside the scope of regular duties.\n Travels to Company and subsidiary offices; offsite client, subcontractor, and supplier meetings; and other locations across North America to fulfill the essential duties of the role as required.\n Exhibits regular and reliable attendance in person as required by the Supervisor, Company guidelines, and/or project and office obligations.\n Performs other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.\n\nKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities\n\n Effectively presents information and responds to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.\n Comprehends and applies principles of advanced calculus, modern algebra, and advanced statistical theory.\n Interprets an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.\n Utilizes Microsoft Office-based applications and project management software systems appropriate for this role.\n\nEducation and Experience\n Bachelor’s degree in engineering, construction management, architecture, or related field and 10-15 years’ experience in construction/engineering trades, or equivalent combination of education and experience.\nCertificates, Licenses, Registrations \n Professional Engineer’s (PE) license is preferred.\nPhysical Demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this position.
