Departmental Overview The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS), in both the College of Engineering and the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is the largest academic department on the Berkeley campus, consisting of over 130 faculty, active emeriti, professors‑in‑residence, and adjunct professors, 3600+ undergraduates in both Engineering and CDSS, 750+ graduate students, and 60+ staff. EECS programs are consistently ranked in the top three by many measures, including U.S. News & World Report's national and global ranking. Annual operating budget (not including expenditures related to research. faculty start‑ups, and student fellowships) for EECS is $40+ million. The Department is actively engaged in teaching and research in the disciplines of Artificial Intelligence, Computational Biology, Databases, Graphics, Hardware / Architecture, Human‑Computer Interaction, Operating Systems / Networking, Programming Systems / Software, Scientific Computing, Theory, Vision (in Computer Science) as well as Biosystems, Communication/Networking, Communications / Physical Layer, Control, Design, Modeling, and Analysis, Electromagnetics/Antennas, Integrated Circuits, Optics, Physical Electronics Devices, Physical Electronics/MEMS, Optoelectronics, Energy, Robotics, Signal Processing for Image & Video, Signal Processing for Speech & Audio (in Electrical Engineering). Computer Science operates research and instructional laboratories in Sutardja Dai Hall, and other off‑campus sites, and Electrical Engineering operates similar facilities in Cory Hall, Sutardja Dai Hall, and other off‑campus sites. EECS also has a significant technical staff support structure to provide support for research and instructional laboratories and fabrication facilities. The Assistant Development Engineer provides engineering and technical support across the instructional laboratories within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS). Reporting to the Senior Development Engineer, this position supports a broad range of instructional technologies spanning electronics, embedded systems, robotics, autonomous systems, RF technologies, laboratory instrumentation, and related instructional systems. This position is well suited for an engineer with a solid technical foundation who is interested in developing expertise in instructional laboratory operations, robotics, embedded platforms, RF instrumentation, and instructional technologies within a leading academic environment. Working closely with senior engineering staff, faculty, instructors, students, and technical staff, the Assistant Development Engineer helps ensure that instructional laboratories and classrooms are safe, reliable, and fully operational in support of teaching and hands‑on learning. Application Review Date The First Review Date for this job is: September 23, 2026 - Open Until Filled Responsibilities Under the general direction of the Senior Development Engineer, provide engineering and technical support across the instructional laboratories within the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences (EECS). Assist faculty, instructors, principal investigators, and senior engineering staff in the setup, integration, testing, operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instructional and research laboratory equipment supporting electronics, embedded systems, controls, robotics, RF technologies, autonomous systems, and laboratory instrumentation. Support the installation, configuration, integration, testing, maintenance, and troubleshooting of instructional laboratory technologies and related systems, including electronic circuits, sensors, embedded platforms, robotic systems, RF equipment, laboratory instrumentation, networked devices, and associated instructional technologies. Assist in implementing and evaluating new laboratory technologies, equipment upgrades, and instructional infrastructure improvements while ensuring compatibility, reliability, maintainability, and compliance with established safety practices. Work collaboratively with senior engineering staff, faculty, students, and technical staff during the planning, implementation, and maintenance of instructional laboratory projects. Assist in the development, configuration, testing, and documentation of laboratory systems to support instructional goals and hands‑on learning. Support the development, modification, testing, and troubleshooting of firmware and software for microprocessors, embedded systems, and laboratory equipment using appropriate development tools and engineering practices. Assist with hardware‑software integration for robotics, embedded platforms, RF systems, sensors, and autonomous systems to ensure reliable operation and compatibility across instructional environments. Participate in interdisciplinary projects involving engineering, computer science, data science, and other research areas by providing technical support for laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and instructional technologies. Assist with the integration and testing of hardware, software, networking, control, and other instructional technologies used in laboratory and classroom environments. Work closely with the Senior Development Engineer to provide technical support, guidance, and training to faculty, students, graduate student instructors (GSIs), lab assistants, and student employees on the proper operation of laboratory and instructional equipment, safety protocols, and best practices for laboratory experimentation. Assist in evaluating and improving instructional laboratory infrastructure, equipment, and operational processes to support evolving instructional and research needs. Help configure, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory environments supporting electronics, embedded systems, robotics, RF, wireless communication, and related instructional technologies. Support the development of laboratory documentation, operating procedures, and training materials to promote safe, reliable, and effective use of instructional facilities. Maintain accurate documentation of laboratory equipment, engineering projects, system configurations, maintenance activities, and technical procedures to support ongoing operations, troubleshooting, and future system enhancements. Monitor the performance and condition of instructional laboratory equipment and instructional systems, identify equipment deficiencies, and assist in implementing timely corrective actions to ensure safe, reliable, and continuous operation. Maintain technical documentation for integrated hardware‑software systems, including electronics, embedded systems, communication interfaces, control systems, and related technologies. Assist with equipment inventories, lifecycle tracking, preventative maintenance records, and documentation updates to support efficient laboratory operations. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training. 3+ years of experience in providing engineering support within educational or research environments. Proficiency in using development tools for microprocessors (e.g., ARM, AVR, PIC, Intel), CAD tools (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks), and other technologies relevant to electrical engineering, computer science, and autonomous or RF systems. Excellent problem‑solving skills and ability to analyze complex technical issues, propose solutions, and implement effective resolutions. Effective communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work closely with diverse stakeholders including faculty, students, and technical staff. Commitment to fostering a positive and supportive learning environment, promoting hands‑on learning and experiential education. Prior experience with instructional labs covering electronics, controls, robotics, RF systems, or related disciplines is highly desirable. Ability to work in a collaborative manner; identify challenges and barriers and recommend resolutions. Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $84,417.84 to $118,535.76 yearly ($7,034.82 to $9,877.98 monthly). This is a 100% FTE career position eligible for full benefits. This position is FLSA Exempt and paid monthly. Other Information This position is governed by the terms and conditions in the agreement for the Technical Unit (TX) between the University of California and the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE).
