City Attorney

The City of Weston, West Virginia is seeking a City Attorney to serve as the chief legal advisor to its elected officials, city departments, boards, commissions, and affiliated entities—including the Weston Sanitary Board. This role offers a unique opportunity to shape and support the legal foundation of the City of Weston. While the position has traditionally been structured at 20 hours per week, Weston is open to creative staffing solutions , including: Two part‑time (half‑time) attorney positions Other flexible arrangements under a W‑2 employee structure Note: The City is not accepting proposals from law firms or independent contractors. This is a W‑2 staff attorney role only. Key Responsibilities Provide legal counsel to the City Council, Mayor, City Manager, city staff, and various boards and commissions Represent the City as prosecuting attorney in Weston Municipal Court Act as legal counsel for the Weston Sanitary Board Draft, review, and interpret ordinances, resolutions, policies, contracts, and other legal documents Advise on land use matters, including real estate transactions, easements, title issues, and deeds Stay current on legislation affecting municipal operations and ensure compliance Attend City Council and other meetings as needed (some evening attendance required) Support legal aspects of city planning, public works, economic development, and code enforcement Qualifications Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school Licensed and in good standing to practice law in the State of West Virginia Experience is not required, but the following are strongly preferred: Experience with municipal, land use, or administrative law Excellent legal research, writing, and communication skills Commitment to ethical, transparent, and public‑minded legal practice Compensation and Benefits Pay Range: $35.00 – $50.00 per hour, depending on qualifications, experience, and employment structure Health Insurance Eligibility: Employees working 20 hours or more per week are eligible to enroll in PEIA (Public Employees Insurance Agency); premiums are employee‑paid at this level Employees averaging 32 hours or more per week receive full access to the City’s benefits, including: City‑subsidized health insurance premiums (including one plan fully paid by the City) Vision, dental, and life insurance options Participation in the West Virginia state retirement system Paid holidays and other employee benefits in accordance with city policy How to Apply Submit your resume and cover letter via Indeed or by emailing View email address on click.appcast.io.
