About the Position

The typical patient census ranges from 22 to 26, with a target census of 25. We have a mixture of private and semi-private rooms. Nurse to patient ratios are 4-5:1 during the day and 5-6:1 at night. The unit addresses a wide range of medical diagnoses, including GI bleeds, sepsis, cellulitis, CHF, COVID, and osteomyelitis. Patients frequently return to the unit after surgeries or procedures. RNs are required to titrate Heparin drips. There is 24-hour charge RN coverage, and the charge nurse ideally does not take on patient assignments. Crisis RN coverage and an administrative supervisor are available around the clock for support. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) are present 24/7, with a PCT-to-patient ratio of 1:10. Patients may require oxygen support up to 6L via nasal cannula or stable BiPAP/CPAP at night or as needed. Telemetry is monitored remotely by a dedicated telemetry department. The unit utilizes Phillips monitoring equipment. A unit clerk is available 24 hours a day. Shifts are scheduled for 12-hour durations from 7 AM to 7 PM and 7 PM to 7 AM. Weekend shifts are required every other weekend. Holidays are rotated among staff. There is no call or standby requirement. Travel RNs may float to similar medical/surgical units as needed. Scrubs of any color are acceptable, and staff must provide their own. RNs are expected to attempt IV starts, utilizing unit resources as necessary; an inpatient phlebotomy team is available for blood draws.
