Sterile Processing Instrument Technician

The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician, under general supervision follows robust processes in Decontamination, Processing and Sterilization by cleaning instruments and equipment ensuring that all items are free of any bioburden, inspecting, function testing and assembling instruments and equipment for High Level Disinfection or Sterilization. The Sterile Processing Technician always follows the Manufacturer's Instructions for Use in Decontamination, Processing, High Level Disinfection & Sterilization as well as Department and Hospital Processes and Policies. The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician must be able accurately maintain the required documentation on written logs and/or computer systems. Documentation includes processes in Decontamination, Processing, High Level Disinfection or Sterilization as well as Sterile Processing Department Equipment. The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician must be able to prioritize instrumentation for processing, answer telephones and dispatch instrumentation, equipment and supplies. The Sterile Processing Instrument Technician performs their duties in a manner consistent with our Mission, Values, and Mercy Service Standards. Performs other duties as assigned. Position Details: Mercy STL Hospital Sterile Processing Tech, FT Qualifications: Education: High school graduate or equivalent Other: Basic computer skills Overview: The decontamination process involves disassembly of instrumentation, robust manually cleaning with multiple steps and various cleaning agents as well as the use of ultrasonic and washer disinfectors. Prepare instrumentation for use by inspecting, function testing and assembling, labeling and preparing for sterilization. Equipment is also assembled and/or disassembled for use such as cords rolled neatly and/or other equipment separated into components. Knows the name of all general surgical instruments and has a general knowledge of their use. Knows specialty instruments and can assemble and prepare specialty items. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Must interact with staff and co-workers across a diverse range of disciplines. Must be able to follow directions. Transforming the Health of Our Communities Our Mercy health system was founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1986. But our heritage goes back more than 195 years. It began with an Irish woman named Catherine McAuley, who was determined to help women and children in Dublin experiencing poverty. Though Catherine had a modest upbringing, she received an unexpected inheritance that allowed her to fulfill that dream. In 1827, she opened the first House of Mercy in Dublin, intending to teach skills to women and educate children. Many volunteers came to help. A few years later, Catherine founded the Sisters of Mercy, one of the first religious orders whose Sisters were free to walk among the poor and visit them in their homes. In 1843, the Sisters of Mercy came to the United States. In 1856, they traveled to St. Louis. In the years to come, they would establish hospitals throughout the Midwest.
