Compliance Lead

We are seeking an experienced HR Compliance professional to lead I-9 and E-Verify compliance projects and participate in ongoing program updates. This role is responsible for driving compliant employment eligibility verification I-9 and E-Verify practices, leading audit activities, strengthening controls, and guiding issue resolution across the full employee lifecycle. The Compliance Lead partners closely with Compliance, Legal, HR, Payroll, Talent Acquisition, and operational stakeholders to manage complex cases, monitor regulatory requirements, and assist with training and standard processes. Key Responsibilities Assist with day-to-day oversight of the organization’s I-9 and E-Verify program, including case management, compliance monitoring, issue escalation, and operational support. Assist with developing and maintaining standard operating procedures, controls, and workflows for Form I-9 completion, reverification, corrections, retention, and E-Verify processing. Support internal audits and self-assessments to identify risk areas, track corrective actions, and strengthen audit readiness. Provide guidance to HR, onboarding, payroll, and business partners on complex or sensitive employment eligibility verification matters, including remote verification and authorized representative processes where applicable. Review and resolve escalated I-9 and E-Verify issues, including tentative nonconfirmations, data discrepancies, late completions, missing forms, and remediation items. Monitor regulatory developments, form updates, and program guidance related to Form I-9, E-Verify, document examination, retention, and anti-discrimination requirements; recommend process or policy updates as needed. Partner with Legal and other stakeholders to prepare for internal reviews, external audits, or government inquiries by organizing records, documenting processes, and supporting response efforts. Lead training and education efforts for internal partners involved in employment eligibility verification, promoting consistent and compliant execution. Identify opportunities to improve systems, controls, and user experience within I-9 and E-Verify processes, including coordination with vendors or internal system owners when applicable. Handle sensitive employee information with a high degree of discretion and in accordance with privacy, security, and records management requirements. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in HR, Legal Studies, Compliance, or a related field preferred. 2+ years of experience in I-9 compliance, HR compliance, onboarding operations, employment verification, payroll operations, or a closely related function. Demonstrated knowledge of Form I-9 and E-Verify requirements, reverification rules, document review standards, retention obligations, and related anti-discrimination considerations. Experience leading or coordinating audits, remediation efforts, compliance reviews, or control-based operational processes. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to assess risk, investigate discrepancies, and make sound recommendations. Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to train, influence, and build trust across functions. High level of organization, attention to detail, and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential information. Proficiency with HRIS, payroll, case management, and Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel, Outlook, and Word. Preferred Qualifications Experience serving as a specialist for I-9 and E-Verify compliance programs. Prior responsibility for developing procedures, training materials, audit protocols, or compliance reporting. Familiarity with electronic I-9 systems, E-Verify administration, and document management controls. HR, compliance, payroll, or related certification (e.g., SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, CPP, FPC) is a plus.
