All operations run off the Dupont Schedule, as follows: 4 Nights On, 3 Off, 3 Days On, 1 Off, 3 Nights On, 3 Off, 4 Days On, 7 OffJob SummaryThe Switchman position will control and coordinate the train movements while switching railcars whether in the yard of a railroad, industrial plant, or similar location to facilitate the unloading and loading of railcars in a safe and efficient manner to service our customers. This position is a manual labor position which requires that the individual become proficient in the following skills, duties, and requirements within a prescribed training and introductory period. This job description is intended to be general and illustrative of the typical duties required of the position. It is not all-inclusive and does not detail every task that may be assigned to the incumbent.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesDemonstrate predictable, reliable, and timely attendanceFollow written and verbal directions to complete assigned tasks on scheduleRead, write, and communicate in English and understand basic mathLearn from directions, observations, and coaching and apply procedures using good judgmentRead switching orders from designated personReceive oral or written instructions from Manager or Customer on which cars are to be switchedNotify engineer of switching orders and which cars are to be moved to specified locations in the yard using radio, verbal, or hand signalsCommunicate with crew or other yard workers via radio to exchange switching informationConfer with train dispatcher via radio to issue or receive information or instructions regarding stops, delays, or oncoming trainsFollow instructions to throw track switches and to couple and uncouple carsTurn hand brake wheel or ratchet-type brake to apply and release handbrakesObserve track to detect obstructionsMaintain records of car numbers, origin, destination, and cargo switchedCoordinate activities of switching crew from locomotive cab, caboose, or control towerRaise coupling lever to couple or uncouple carsThrow track switches to facilitate shunting of cars and signal Engineer to move cars using lantern, arm signals, or radioConnect air hoses to cars when making up trains by bending and applying forceSet warning signals, such as flares, flags, or lanterns, at the front and rear of the train during emergency stops to warn oncoming trainsSit or ride in the cab of the locomotive to observe signals from other crew membersMake minor repairs to couplings and air hoses and report any equipment requiring major repairsCommunicate with Dispatcher via radio to exchange switching informationRead and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manualsQualificationsTo perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
