About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse - Labor & Delivery Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Labor and Delivery Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years in Labor and Delivery License: Registered Nurse License Certifications: BLS, ACLS, NRP, Intermediate or Advanced FHM Must-Have: - Experience working in a facility comparable in size and acuity - Ability to provide lactation support and safe skin-to-skin protocol - Experience in cervical exams, fetal scalp electrodes, and management of insulin drips - Ability to circulate during c-sections and manage neonatal resuscitation Description: ASAP start needed. The unit has an average of 1800 deliveries per year. The hospital typically performs four scheduled events daily including c-sections and versions. The Labor and Delivery Unit consists of 7 labor rooms and 2 triage rooms. There is a PreOp/PACU in the labor room and 2 OR suites. Postpartum/Antepartum/GYN/Mother-Baby has 25 beds, which may overflow into Antepartum. The unit covers a large geographical area with numerous referrals, including cases that require NICU. Currently, we are not designated as Baby Friendly and have only pool lactation staff available. There are many CLCs and IBCLCs who assist in the labor room. The Mother-Baby and Labor Delivery areas are physically separate but located next to one another. Common patient diagnoses include PIH, GDM, Pre-Eclampsia, Eclampsia, HELLP, shoulder dystocia, postpartum hemorrhage, multiples, fetal loss, and drug addiction. Newborn care is provided if the mother stays in the unit for continuous surveillance. Labor nurses document feeds and vitals for newborns if necessary. There are specific patient ratios: cervical ripening is 1:1-3, laboring is 1:1-3, and active labor is 1:1. Postpartum/Antepartum ratios are 3 couplets or 3 Antepartum/NICU moms. Minimum staffing for labor and delivery is 6 RNs during the day and night shifts. Support on the unit includes a unit secretary during the day shift, a bed flow facilitator, and a CST available 24/7. A charge nurse is present 24/7, and a phlebotomist draws any subsequent labs needed after initial labs are drawn with IV placement. Anesthesia is available 24/7, as is the OB provider on call coverage. There is support from family medicine residents who have attending backup, and mid-level providers may be on call. Fetal monitoring is conducted remotely at the bedside and nurses' station. The facility uses Cerner for EMR, Alaris for IV pumps, and Pyxis for medication dispensing. Staff may float to the Mother-Baby unit, focusing on Antepartum, Postpartum, or occasionally Newborn Nursery. Weekend rotations require working at least 4 out of 8 weekend shifts, which may be back-to-back. There is a rotation for holiday expectations. Scrubs are navy and provided on site with credits for the scrub machine allotted at the start of the shift.
