Biomedical Equipment TechnicianThe Biomedical Equipment Technician serves as Boston MedFlight's primary in-house technical resource for the inspection, preventive maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, repair, lifecycle management, and technical support of medical equipment and related systems used in critical care transport operations.Working with a high degree of independence, the Biomedical Equipment Technician ensures that medical equipment is safe, reliable, operationally ready, and maintained in accordance with manufacturer recommendations, Boston MedFlight policies and procedures, and applicable regulatory and safety requirements.The position provides technical expertise throughout the medical equipment lifecycle, including equipment evaluation and acquisition, acceptance testing, deployment, maintenance, repair, upgrades, integration, replacement, and retirement. The Biomedical Equipment Technician also supports organizational innovation through equipment design, computer-aided design (CAD), prototyping, additive manufacturing/3D printing, and development of technical solutions specific to the critical care transport environment.Essential Responsibilities:Medical Equipment Management & MaintenanceServes as the primary in-house technical resource for Boston MedFlight medical equipment and related biomedical systems.Inspects newly acquired medical devices and systems for safety, functionality, completeness, and operational readiness and assigns appropriate equipment identification and control information.Performs preventive and scheduled maintenance, performance verification, calibration, functional testing, and electrical safety testing in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and established organizational procedures.Develops and maintains preventive maintenance schedules and monitors completion and compliance for the organization's medical equipment inventory.Maintains appropriate biomedical test equipment and ensures required calibration and certification of test equipment remain current.Conducts periodic inspections of medical equipment located at Boston MedFlight bases, aircraft, ground vehicles, clinical areas, and other operational locations to evaluate condition, performance, and readiness.Coordinates manufacturer or third-party service when repairs or maintenance exceed internal capabilities and verifies equipment performance and safety prior to return to operational service.Maintains appropriate replacement parts, repair components, accessories, tools, and technical supplies necessary to support the biomedical equipment program.Troubleshooting, Repair & Equipment SafetyEvaluates and troubleshoots medical equipment failures using specialized and generic test equipment, diagnostic software, manufacturer service documentation, schematics, and other technical resources.Diagnoses electrical, electronic, mechanical, pneumatic, battery/power, software, connectivity, accessory, and other equipment-related problems and performs repairs within authorized service capabilities.Responds to equipment failures and operational concerns and prioritizes repairs based upon equipment availability, clinical importance, patient safety, and operational needs.Evaluates reported equipment failures and safety concerns and removes equipment from service when continued operation may present a patient, crew, equipment, or operational safety risk.Performs appropriate functional, performance, calibration, and safety testing following repair before returning medical equipment to operational service.Investigates recurring equipment failures, identifies trends and potential root causes, and recommends corrective actions, modifications, changes in maintenance practices, or equipment replacement as appropriate.Provides technical support during equipment-related incidents, investigations, and safety reviews.Equipment Lifecycle, Integration & QualityParticipates in the evaluation and selection of new medical equipment and provides technical recommendations regarding performance, reliability, maintainability, compatibility, service requirements, accessories, lifecycle considerations, and suitability for critical care transport operations.Coordinates or assists with equipment acceptance testing, configuration, installation, deployment, software and firmware updates, upgrades, and retirement.Evaluates medical equipment integration within aircraft, ground vehicles, and other transport platforms, including equipment mounting, power requirements, battery performance, charging, cable management, accessory compatibility, and operational configuration.Assists with the development, evaluation, installation, and testing of medical equipment mounting and transport configurations in collaboration with clinical, aviation, vehicle maintenance, safety, manufacturer, and engineering resources as appropriate.Monitors manufacturer safety notices, recalls, field corrective actions, service bulletins, software/firmware updates, and other technical communications affecting Boston MedFlight medical equipment and coordinates appropriate action.Maintains accurate and complete documentation of equipment inventory, inspections, preventive maintenance, calibrations, repairs, parts utilization, upgrades, equipment status, and service activities within the organization's equipment management system.Uses maintenance and repair data to identify equipment failure trends, recurring problems, reliability concerns, excessive repair requirements, and opportunities for operational improvement or equipment replacement.Engineering, Design & Technical InnovationCollaborates with clinical, logistics, aviation, vehicle maintenance, safety, and operational personnel to identify equipment-related challenges and develop practical technical solutions appropriate for the critical care transport environment.Utilizes computer-aided design (CAD), 3D modeling, additive manufacturing/3D printing, and other fabrication methods to develop prototypes, organizational aids, equipment accessories, mounting concepts, protective components, training aids, and other approved operational solutions.Develops prototypes and conducts iterative evaluation and testing of proposed equipment configurations, components, accessories, and technical solutions prior to operational implementation.Evaluates material selection, mechanical strength, durability, cleanability, chemical compatibility, temperature tolerance, vibration resistance, environmental exposure, and other relevant factors when designing or fabricating components.Maintains design documentation as appropriate, including CAD files, design revisions, material specifications, intended use, testing information, and approval status.Operates and maintains 3D printers and associated fabrication equipment, software, materials, tools, and supplies.Supports equipment modification and improvement projects while ensuring that internally developed or fabricated components undergo appropriate technical, operational, safety, and other required organizational review prior to implementation.Does not independently modify medical devices, certified mounting systems, aircraft systems, vehicle safety systems, or other safety-critical components in a manner inconsistent with manufacturer requirements or organizational approval processes.Education & Technical SupportProvides technical education and support to clinical, logistics, and operational personnel regarding medical equipment operation, safe handling, routine care, battery management, basic troubleshooting, equipment limitations, and recognition and reporting of equipment malfunctions.Provides technical input for equipment-related policies, procedures, training materials, equipment evaluations, and implementation projects.Serves as a technical liaison with medical equipment manufacturers, service organizations, vendors, and other biomedical or engineering resources.Maintains current technical knowledge through manufacturer training, service documentation, continuing education, and independent professional development.Additional DutiesParticipates in medical equipment and clinical technology projects as assigned.Assists with equipment inventory, procurement, receiving, deployment, and replacement planning.Supports organizational quality improvement, safety, and equipment standardization initiatives.Performs computer data entry, reporting, and assigned administrative responsibilities related to the biomedical equipment program.Travels between Boston MedFlight bases, hospitals, vendors, and other operational locations as required.Performs other duties consistent with the responsibilities and technical scope of the position as assigned.Qualifications:Education and ExperienceAssociate degree in Biomedical Equipment Technology, Biomedical Engineering Technology, Electronics Technology, Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline preferred. An equivalent combination of education, specialized technical training, and directly related biomedical equipment experience may be considered.Three or more years of progressively responsible experience maintaining, troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and inspecting biomedical or medical equipment preferred.Demonstrated ability to independently troubleshoot electrical, electronic, mechanical, and software-related equipment problems using appropriate test equipment, diagnostic tools, technical documentation, and service procedures.Previous experience with critical care, emergency medical services, transport, aviation, or mobile medical equipment is preferred.Manufacturer-specific medical equipment training or biomedical equipment certification is preferred.Knowledge, Skills & AbilitiesStrong understanding of electrical, electronic, mechanical, and biomedical equipment safety principles.Ability to work independently with minimal direct technical supervision and appropriately prioritize competing equipment maintenance, repair, and operational needs.Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, manufacturer service documentation, equipment specifications, and maintenance procedures.Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, electronic test equipment, biomedical test equipment, diagnostic software, and computer-based equipment management systems.Knowledge or experience with CAD
