Key Responsibilities

  1. Sample Collection and Preparation
    • Collect, label, and process patient specimens, including blood, urine, and tissue samples.
    • Ensure proper handling, storage, and transportation of specimens to avoid contamination or degradation.
    • Prepare samples for analysis, including centrifugation, preparing slides for microscopy, and separating serum or plasma as required.
  2. Performing Laboratory Tests
    • Conduct routine laboratory tests in hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, immunology, and urinalysis, among others.
    • Operate laboratory instruments and equipment, including microscopes, analyzers, and automated machines, to perform tests.
    • Analyze test results, compare them with normal ranges, and document findings accurately.
    • Follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) for each test to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
  3. Quality Control and Assurance
    • Perform routine quality control (QC) checks on laboratory equipment, reagents, and test results to ensure accuracy.
    • Troubleshoot and address any issues or discrepancies in test results or equipment.
    • Document quality control results and make adjustments as necessary to maintain accuracy in testing.
  4. Data Entry and Documentation
    • Enter and maintain accurate test results in the laboratory information system (LIS) or patient medical records.
    • Maintain detailed records of tests, results, and patient information in compliance with regulatory standards and hospital policies.
    • Ensure proper documentation for all laboratory procedures, including patient results, quality control checks, and equipment maintenance.
  5. Laboratory Equipment Maintenance
    • Calibrate, maintain, and clean laboratory equipment to ensure it is functioning properly.
    • Identify and report equipment malfunctions to supervisors or the biomedical engineering team for repairs.
    • Maintain inventories of reagents, supplies, and equipment, and ensure that they are well-stocked and ready for use.
  6. Collaboration and Communication
    • Collaborate with laboratory staff, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to ensure the appropriate handling of patient samples and the timely delivery of results.
    • Communicate abnormal test results to the appropriate clinical staff and assist in the interpretation of the results.
    • Participate in team meetings to discuss lab performance, new procedures, and improvements.
  7. Compliance and Safety
    • Adhere to all regulatory and safety guidelines, including those set by the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and HIPAA.
    • Ensure proper disposal of hazardous materials and maintain a safe and sterile laboratory environment.
    • Follow infection control protocols to prevent contamination and ensure patient and staff safety.
  8. Patient Interaction (if applicable)
    • In some settings, MLTs may interact with patients to collect specimens or explain certain procedures related to testing.
    • Provide patient education regarding specimen collection instructions or other necessary details to ensure accurate results.
  9. Professional Development
    • Stay current with advances in laboratory technologies, procedures, and best practices through continuing education.
