Utilities Technician

The Utilities Technician operates and maintains all site utility systems, including steam boilers, thermal oxidizer, compressed air, ammonia and glycol refrigeration, building HVAC, wastewater treatment, and general facility infrastructure. This role ensures safe, reliable, and compliant operation of critical utilities by performing preventative maintenance, troubleshooting issues, completing repairs, and maintaining accurate records in accordance with OSHA and EPA requirements.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain site utility systems such as steam boilers, thermal oxidizer, compressed air, ammonia and glycol refrigeration, building HVAC, and wastewater treatment equipment.
• Perform ongoing maintenance and repairs on facility HVAC systems, including troubleshooting issues, replacing components, and optimizing performance.
• Monitor the ammonia refrigeration system, respond to alarms or abnormal conditions, and take appropriate corrective actions to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Operate and maintain combustion equipment and compressed air systems, ensuring reliability and adherence to safety and regulatory standards.
• Carry out general facility maintenance tasks, including office repairs, roof leak repairs, and lighting replacements throughout the building.
• Use technical drawings, prints, and instruction manuals to plan and execute preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs on mechanical and electrical equipment.
• Perform electrical and mechanical maintenance duties across the plant, supporting utilities, refrigeration, and facilities systems as needed.
• Conduct preventative maintenance on boilers, chillers, HVAC units, refrigeration systems, and associated utilities to minimize downtime and extend equipment life.
• Troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and instrumentation issues, identify root causes, and implement effective repair solutions.
• Maintain accurate written logs and electronic records of maintenance activities, inspections, and system performance to meet OSHA and EPA compliance requirements.
• Utilize a computer to input, update, and manage maintenance data, work orders, and equipment history in the appropriate systems.
• Support regulatory compliance efforts by following established procedures, documenting activities, and assisting with inspections related to utilities and environmental systems.

Essential Skills

• Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience working with HVAC, combustion, and refrigeration systems.
• Minimum of 5 years of mechanical, electrical/instrumentation, or maintenance experience in a manufacturing environment.
• Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting large HVAC systems in an industrial or commercial setting.
• Practical experience with ammonia refrigeration systems, including monitoring, maintenance, and repair of large freezer and refrigeration units.
• Strong background in facilities maintenance, including electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and general building repairs.
• Proficiency in boiler operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
• Experience working with chillers, including preventative maintenance and repair activities.
• Ability to perform preventative maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting on utilities equipment such as boilers, chillers, refrigeration systems, and HVAC units.
• Capability to read and interpret technical drawings, prints, and instruction manuals to guide maintenance and repair work.
• Comfort using computers to input, maintain, and retrieve accurate records and maintenance data.
• Ability to work on feet throughout a large facility and manage responsibilities across the entire building during long shifts.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Previous experience in food manufacturing environments is preferred.
• Regulatory compliance experience related to OSHA, EPA, or similar requirements is preferred.
• Electrical and instrumentation experience in a manufacturing setting is preferred.
• Experience with utilities systems including refrigeration, boilers, chillers, compressed air, and HVAC.
• Familiarity with plumbing work and facilities maintenance tasks.
• Demonstrated troubleshooting skills for mechanical, electrical, and refrigeration systems.
• Ability to work both day and night 2-2-3 shift schedules as needed.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety and equipment reliability.

Work Environment

The role is based in a large, expansive manufacturing facility where the Utilities Technician is responsible for systems and equipment throughout the entire building. The work involves being on your feet for most of the shift, moving between different areas of the plant to address utilities and facilities needs. The environment includes industrial utilities such as boilers, chillers, ammonia refrigeration, HVAC systems, compressed air systems, combustion equipment, and wastewater treatment equipment. Work is performed on a 2-2-3 rotating schedule, with day shifts running from 6:00 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and night shifts from 6:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m. The setting requires comfort working in a busy, dynamic production environment with exposure to mechanical and electrical equipment, and the ability to adapt to varying conditions across the facility.

This is a Permanent position based out of LONGMONT, CO.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $83360.00 - $83360.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
