Assistant Electric Utility Engineer

Department Overview Silicon Valley Power (SVP) currently provides over 40% of Santa Clara’s electricity from carbon‑free renewable resources, using wind, solar, geothermal, hydroelectric, methane capture, and solar systems on city property. SVP’s mission is to be a service‑oriented utility that offers reliable, competitively priced services while maintaining low residential rates. Position Summary Assistant Electric Utility Engineer – entry‑level professional engineer working in electric system planning, design, construction, and maintenance. The role reports to a Principal, Senior, or Division Manager and contributes to design, standards development, and project implementation across the Electric Department. Responsibilities Under direct supervision, perform field and office work in electric system planning, design, construction, and maintenance programs. Participate in engineering team activities, conduct design studies, establish standards, and implement construction projects. May be assigned to any division within the Electric Department. Qualifications Minimum Education / Experience Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering from an ABET‑accredited institution. OR State of California Engineer‑In‑Training (E.I.T.) Certificate with at least one year of experience in electrical or mechanical engineering office or field work, and proficiency with AutoCAD and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MATLAB). Valid California Class C driver’s license required at time of appointment. Desirable Qualifications Registration as an Engineer (electrical, mechanical or civil) in California. Experience with ESRI GIS. Other Requirements Must be able to perform all essential functions of the job. May be required to work shifts, weekends, and unusual hours for emergency situations. Position may be filled at or near the minimum of the salary range. Benefits Overview (Bargaining Unit #4) Retirement California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) Classic Employees: 2.7% @ age 55 formula – employee pays 8.00% of gross pay, minus $61 bi‑weekly. New Employees: 2.0% @ age 62 formula – employee pays 7.00% of gross pay. Medicare and Social Security (FICA) – employee pays 6.20% up to $11,439 (Social Security) and 1.45% (Medicare) of gross pay. Health Insurance City contributes up to 100% of the premium for Employee Only and Employee + 1 Dependent plans; up to 90% for Employee + 2 or more dependents (Kaiser Region 1). Employees with plans costing more than the City contribution pay additional premiums pre‑tax. Employees may opt‑out and receive cash‑in‑lieu of $250/month. Coverage effective the first day of the month after hire. Dental Insurance Choice of two Delta Dental plans; enrollment mandatory. City pays lowest cost employee‑only plan; employee pays additional cost. Coverage effective the first day of the month after hire. Vision Insurance Choice of two VSP plans. Life Insurance – City pays up to $250,000 of basic coverage; employee may purchase additional optional insurance. Fixed‑payment benefits: Deferred compensation ($330/month City contribution to 457(b) plan). Flexible Spending Accounts (health, dependent care, commuter). Vacation – accrual based on years of service, maximum 400 hours. Sick Leave – 96 hours per calendar year, with conversion rules.
