RN Neurology

Job Summary:

The SMH Level 2 Registered Nurse for the Neurology unit provides specialized nursing care to patients with neurological conditions such as stroke, epilepsy, Multiple Sclerosis, and Guillain Barre Syndrome. This role involves utilizing critical thinking and telemetry skills in a fast-paced, comprehensive stroke and epilepsy monitoring environment. The nurse collaborates with a multidisciplinary team to deliver high-quality care using advanced technology and evidence-based practices. This position requires at least two years of nursing experience, telemetry expertise, and relevant certifications. Responsibilities:

• Provide skilled nursing care to patients with acute and complex neurological conditions.
• Perform continuous monitoring using video EEG and telemetry equipment.
• Conduct patient assessments and collaborate with interdisciplinary team members for treatment planning.
• Administer medications and treatments according to protocols and physician orders.
• Respond to patient emergencies and provide appropriate interventions.
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation of patient status and care provided.
• Participate in quality improvement initiatives and compliance with Joint Commission standards.
• Support patient and family education regarding neurological conditions and care plans.

Required Skills & Certifications:

• Active Registered Nurse license in New York State only.
• Minimum of two (2) years nursing experience.
• Telemetry experience required.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
• NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification.

Preferred Skills & Certifications:

• Experience working in a neurological or stroke unit.
• Familiarity with continuous video EEG monitoring technology.
• Experience with electronic health record systems such as EPIC.

Special Considerations:

• Must be willing to work rotating day, evening, and night shifts.
• Weekend block scheduling including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
• On-call, callback, and charge nurse responsibilities as needed.
• Work in a Joint Commission accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center and Level 4 Epilepsy Monitoring Unit.
• Compliance with hospital policies regarding TB skin testing and other health screenings.

Scheduling:

• Rotating shifts covering days, evenings, and nights.
• Weekend block schedule including Friday through Sunday.
• Up to 48 hours per week with regular time pay.
• Shift assignments based on unit needs and staffing requirements.
