Secondary Special Education Teacher (Grades 6–12)
Location: Tacoma, Washington
Position Overview

• The Secondary Special Education Teacher provides individualized instruction and support to middle and high school students with disabilities. This role is responsible for developing and implementing Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promoting student independence, and ensuring compliance with Washington Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) regulations and federal laws. The teacher works collaboratively to create inclusive learning environments that foster academic achievement, social-emotional growth, and post-secondary readiness.

Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Support

• Deliver differentiated, standards-based instruction aligned with Washington State Learning Standards
• Provide specialized instruction in academic content areas, executive functioning, and transition/life skills
• Modify curriculum, assignments, and assessments to meet diverse learning needs
• Support students in inclusive/general education settings through co-teaching or push-in services

IEP Development & Compliance

• Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
• Ensure compliance with IDEA, Section 504, and Washington State special education regulations (WACs)
• Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including progress monitoring and service logs
• Lead and participate in IEP meetings, eligibility reviews, and reevaluations
• Transition Planning (Critical for Secondary Level)
• Develop and implement transition plans for students aged 16+
• Support college, career, and independent living readiness
• Collaborate with families, community agencies, and vocational programs

Collaboration & Communication

• Partner with general education teachers to implement inclusive practices and accommodations
• Work with related service providers (e.g., speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, school psychologists)
• Communicate regularly with families/guardians regarding student progress
• Participate in multidisciplinary teams, MTSS, and Professional Learning Communities (PLCs)

Behavior & Classroom Management

• Implement Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
• Apply trauma-informed and culturally responsive practices
• Create a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment

Assessment & Data Use

• Conduct formal and informal assessments aligned with OSPI guidelines
• Analyze student data to guide instruction and intervention strategies
• Prepare required reports and progress updates

Qualifications
Required

• Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or related field
• Valid Washington State teaching certificate with Special Education endorsement (or ability to obtain through OSPI)
• Knowledge of IDEA, IEP processes, and Washington Administrative Code (WAC) requirements
• Strong instructional differentiation and classroom management skills

Preferred

• Master’s degree in Special Education or related field
• Experience working at the secondary level (middle or high school)
• Experience with transition planning and post-secondary readiness
• Familiarity with co-teaching, inclusion models, and MTSS frameworks
• Experience with assistive technology and behavior supports
