Unit Profile

Location: Overland Park, KS

Unit Name: Cardiovascular Care Unit

Number of Beds: 28

Patient Ratios: 4-5 patients per nurse

Unit Description

The Cardiovascular Care Unit is dedicated to providing care for acute cardiac patients, including catheterization laboratory patients (e.g., ablations, PFO closures, stents, pacemakers, etc.). We also care for stroke patients and accommodate overflow from other progressive care units. Emphasizing safety and quality, we maintain high standards for documentation compliance and processes related to central lines, Foley catheters, Clostridioides difficile infections, and other hospital-acquired infections.

Teamwork and support from charge nurses are key to our unit's success. Our staff includes unit secretaries and techs available to assist on the floor.

Scheduling Requirements

Staff are required to work every third weekend and complete three shifts per week.

Floating Policy

Staff may float to similar units, including Orthopedics, Neurology, Cardiac Care Unit, Clinical Decision Unit, Surgical Step-down Unit, Observation, and Rehabilitation.

Patient Experience Focus

Our commitment to patient experience involves:

• Conducting daily nurse leader rounds on every patient
• Asking for patients' preferred names and making personal connections
• Coaching staff on areas that may not meet expectations
• Monitoring room tidiness and adherence to safety and quality measures

Certifications Needed

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• Basic Dysrhythmia Certification
• NIH Stroke Certification

Desired Skills and Qualifications

Candidates should possess a positive attitude and a strong focus on teamwork. While prior cardiac experience is beneficial, it is not mandatory.

Essential Procedures

Basic telemetry procedures performed in the unit.

Dress Code

Required uniform consists of royal blue scrub tops and royal blue or black pants. Undershirts may be grey, white, black, or royal blue.
