Job Description As a Healthcare Safety and Security Officer you safeguard UofL Health campuses, ensuring a safe environment for patients, visitors and staff. You detect, prevent, and report suspicious activity, respond to emergencies, and provide professional customer service. Responsibilities Observe and remain vigilant for signs of crime, disorder, hazard and unusual activity. Patrol on foot, bicycle or vehicle to check for unsafe conditions, blocked entryways, security violations, mechanical problems and unauthorized individuals. Sound alarms or call for police, fire department or EMS in case of fires, medical emergencies, criminal activities or presence of unauthorized persons. Respond to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials or inclement weather with calm urgency. Provide customer service while carrying out safety and security procedures and emergency response activities. Respond to critical situations in a calm, problem‑solving manner. Conduct regular and random patrols around the business and perimeter. Orally and physically de‑escalate individuals and situations as needed. Inspect all security devices and fire control equipment. Screen patients, visitors and employees to expedite their admission. Assist with patient escort, patient watch, safety escort and transport deceased to morgue when required. Use respiratory protection equipment and tight‑fitting respirators in accordance with OSHA standards (medical and religious waivers may be granted on a case‑by‑case basis). Shift Length & Schedule Shift length varies by location: 8, 10 or 12‑hour shifts. Typical weekly hours: 5–8‑hour shifts, 4–10‑hour shifts or 3–12‑hour shifts per week. Other Functions Applicants will be subject to a background investigation in accordance with federal, state and local laws. Applicants will be required to pass a drug screen to the extent permitted by law. Relevant licensing requirements may be required prior to employment. A valid unrestricted driver’s license is required. Maintain compliance with all company policies, procedures and standards of conduct. Comply with HIPAA privacy and security requirements to maintain confidentiality. Perform other duties as assigned. Education and Experience Be at least 18 years of age. Verifiable high‑school diploma or GED. Successfully complete the UofL Health‑Safety, Security, and Emergency Preparedness Training program. Ability to de‑escalate individuals and situations orally and physically as needed. Ability to inspect security devices and fire control equipment. Ability to screen members, visitors and client employees to expedite admission. Ability to respond to incidents of fire, medical emergency, bomb threat, flooding, water discharge, elevator emergency, hazardous materials or inclement weather with calm urgency. Proficiency in providing patient escort and safety escort as required. Language Ability Communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats. Reasoning Ability Critically think through complex patient situations, process improvements, evidence‑based practice and emergency situations. Assist others in developing clinical reasoning skills. Computer Skills Basic understanding of computers to operate surveillance cameras, door access systems, fire alarm systems, intrusion alarms and panic alarms. Prepare reports as required.
