Dean of Students

Title: Dean of Students Reports To: Building Principal Department: Building Classification: 10 month, with up to 12 additional days FLSA Status: Not exempt Job Overview The middle school dean of students provides leadership and direction in supporting and promoting a safe learning environment for each student. Qualifications A current Professional Educator License (PEL) Administrative endorsement – Preferred At least five years teaching experience Knowledge of Middle School Philosophy Extensive knowledge in social-emotional learning and student discipline Performance Responsibilities Leadership Responds to parent, student and staff concerns in a supportive and timely manner Assists school staff and substitutes with their concerns regarding student conduct Collaborates with staff (in a non-evaluative manner) to build stronger relationships with students in regards to classroom management and behavioral interventions Serves as a vital member of the building Problem Solving Team Assists with school wide efforts related to school culture, climate, character education, social-emotional well being and behavioral initiatives, in line with CCSD 46 initiatives Monitors, organizes, and provides leadership in the area of attendance improvement efforts Establishes methods to seek feedback from students to gain insight into their perceptions about how the school wide culture is supporting their academic, social, emotional and character development Assists leadership in the planning and direction of assemblies and special events Behavioral Interventions Builds and models positive relationships with all students Involved in the development and implementation of proactive behavior intervention programs for students Motivates students in a positive direction that will allow them to increase individual decision‑making responsibilities Communicates with parents, teachers, special services department, support personnel, and students on matters of student’s needs, plans and discipline for student success Collects and analyzes data to monitor and assess current student behavior and to develop new programs or systems to enhance the learning experience for students for the future Safety Takes a leadership role in maintaining and supervising a safe learning environment Assists with facilitation and implementation of all activities related to school-wide emergency preparedness initiatives Participates on Building Safety Team Assists in the communication of the school safety plans to students and colleagues Supervises and supports student arrival and dismissal process Evaluation As per current State Law and the District’s current collective bargaining agreement This job description is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by employees assigned to this position and is not an exhaustive list of all duties and responsibilities.
