Physician Assistant Primary Care

Overview The Physician Assistant (PA) Primary Care is a licensed, certified non-physician healthcare provider who renders direct patient care and may have delegated prescriptive authority. The PA is credentialed and privileged, and bills as an independent provider as recognized by Medicare/Medicaid within the healthcare system, in accordance with the supervising physician and applicable board scope of practice. The PA provides medical care in alignment with the supervising physician allowing practice in internal medicine, family medicine, geriatrics, or pediatrics settings. Responsibilities Assess the physical and mental condition of patients by performing comprehensive or problem-focused physical examinations and medical histories. Order, collect, interpret, and evaluate laboratory and other diagnostic tests to assess patient problems and health care needs. Prescribe, recommend, and/or employ medical drug therapies or other related treatments and procedures in accordance with approved protocols/policies, with attention to efficacy, safety, and cost. Advise interventions to modify health-related behaviors and health risks. Formulate and implement outcomes-based patient treatment plans in collaboration with physicians and the interdisciplinary team when appropriate. Evaluate patient responses to care and the effectiveness of interventions. Counsel patients and families regarding medical processes, management of conditions, medications, nutrition, and health promotion. Counsel patients about drug regimens and potential interactions with foods, supplements, over-the-counter medications, and herbal remedies. Maintain appropriate records detailing treatment plans and outcomes; initiate timely consultations and referrals when necessary and beyond scope of practice or expertise. Provide consultation-level services for conditions related to the PA specialties and training. Perform invasive procedures within the scope of practice delegated by the supervising physician. May care for a patient panel in a team-based model focusing on acute and chronic illness management and population health. Key Competencies Knowledge of diagnosing and treating injuries, diseases, and deformities, including symptoms, treatment alternatives, drug properties and interactions, and preventive care. Knowledge of principles and procedures for diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of physical and mental dysfunctions. Verbal and written communication skills; interpersonal skills; critical thinking and complex problem-solving. Proficiency with computers and related software; ability to develop and implement comprehensive outcomes-based treatment plans; ability to counsel patients on medical and psychological conditions and behavior modification; ability to interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests. Qualifications Current license to practice as a Physician Assistant in the state of Texas. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification; BLS within 30 days of hire or transfer. Current certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Education: Graduation from an accredited PA program. Experience: Less than 1 year of experience (entry level).
