Kitchen Assistant

Position Summary The Kitchen Assistant supports the daily food service operations of a men's shelter by assisting with meal preparation, serving meals, maintaining kitchen cleanliness, and ensuring food safety standards are followed. This position plays an important role inproviding nutritious meals in a respectful and welcoming environment for shelter residents. Duties typically include food preparation, meal service, dishwashing, inventory assistance, and maintaining a clean and organized kitchen. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assist with the preparation and serving of breakfast, lunch, and/or dinner for shelter residents. Prepare ingredients by washing, chopping, slicing, and portioning food items. Set up serving stations and distribute meals in a courteous and professional manner. Wash dishes, utensils, pots, pans, and kitchen equipment. Clean and sanitize kitchen work areas, dining areas, refrigerators, freezers, and storage spaces. Follow all food safety, sanitation, and health department regulations. Receive, organize, label, and properly store food deliveries and donations. Monitor inventory levels and notify supervisors when supplies need replenishing. Assist with stocking shelves and rotating food items using FIFO (First In, First Out) procedures. Remove trash and recycling and maintain cleanliness throughout the facility. Work collaboratively with shelter staff, volunteers, and residents while maintaining a positive and respectful environment. Perform other related duties as assigned by management. Qualifications High school diploma or GED preferred. Previous food service, kitchen, or shelter experience preferred but not required. Knowledge of basic food preparation and sanitation practices. Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Strong teamwork, communication, and organizational skills. Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism. Food Handler Certification preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire. Physical Requirements Ability to stand and walk for extended periods. Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds. Ability to bend, stoop, reach, and perform repetitive tasks. Ability to work in a fast-paced kitchen environment. Work Environment This position operates within a shelter setting dedicated to serving individuals experiencing homelessness.
