Medical Laboratory Scientist Group Lead – Hematology Location: Houston, TX, Tuesday to Saturday, 3:00 AM to 12:00 PM Pay range: $36.97+ per hour. Employees may be eligible to receive shift differential of 10% for some or all hours worked on the second shift and 15% for some or all hours worked on the third shift. Additional details on shift differential will be provided if an offer is extended. Job Description Perform laboratory procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring independent judgment and responsibility within the qualified specialties. Assist Lab Supervisor and serve as a technical resource for the department. Responsibilities Demonstrate proficiency in all duties of a Medical Technologist I and II. Perform and report on assigned analytical tests in accordance with applicable SOPs, ensuring quality control requirements are met. Actively support and comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling, test analysis, reporting, and record‑keeping. Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times, including STAT or critical results. Conduct QC analysis, ensuring accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function; make quality control decisions regarding assay or test disposition. Review requests for validity checks and recommend an appropriate course of action, considering specimen limitations, time, and additional testing. Serve as a technical resource for the department, investigating and resolving analytical testing problems, recommending actions for issues beyond acceptable limits, and responding to non‑routine/complex inquiries from clients and sales representatives. Assist Lab Supervisor in monitoring workflow, distributing and reviewing work assignments, training staff, resolving staff issues, and providing input for performance appraisals and disciplinary actions. Expedite workflow to maximize productivity by evaluating production systems, recommending enhancements, and coordinating resolution of issues involving other laboratory departments. Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition. Complete training and competency checklists; assist with annual competency testing and documentation. Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements; review department activities for compliance. Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and/or work practice controls as directed. Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed. Perform necessary supervisory functions in the absence of a Supervisor, if qualified and delegated. Other duties as assigned. Qualifications Required Work Experience: 3 to 5 years of clinical experience as a Medical Technologist within the designated discipline. Foreign educated candidates: Must provide a detailed credential evaluation from IERF. U.S. educated candidates: Must provide an original transcript. Preferred Work Experience: Experience as a Medical Technologist at Quest. Physical and Mental Requirements: Lifting and carrying: 1–10 pounds frequently; 11–25 pounds occasionally; 36–50 pounds seldom; over 50 pounds not to be lifted without assistance. Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods. Frequent walking and/or standing. Manual dexterity required for pipettes and instruments. Knowledge: Comprehensive theoretical and operational knowledge in the designated specialty. Knowledge of organizational and departmental policies and procedures. Skills: Proven leadership and problem‑solving skills. Detail‑oriented, ability to work independently, set priorities, and manage multiple tasks. Ability to schedule and manage resources to meet department goals. Interpersonal skills for courteous and effective communication with supervisors, coworkers, and clients. Communication skills for handling telephone inquiries. Confidential handling of client information. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems. Education: Medical Technology, Chemistry, Biology, or prior qualification as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433 (required). License/Certificate: ASCP Certification (preferred).
