Family Law Attorney

An established family law firm in East Islip, NY is seeking an Associate Attorney to join its growing team. The firm handles a broad range of family law matters, including divorce, custody, support, and family offense proceedings, and is looking for someone who is confident, personable, and motivated to grow as a litigator. Candidates with direct family law experience are strongly preferred. However, the firm is also open to training the right attorney who has prior exposure to litigation or family law and is eager to develop courtroom and client advocacy skills.

Responsibilities

• Draft pleadings, motions, affidavits, stipulations, and discovery demands/responses
• Appear in court for conferences, motions, hearings, and related proceedings
• Participate in client consultations, intake meetings, and case strategy discussions
• Communicate with clients, opposing counsel, and court personnel professionally and effectively
• Manage multiple active litigation matters while maintaining organized digital files
• Assist clients through emotionally sensitive and high-conflict family law matters
• Work collaboratively with the legal team while taking ownership of assigned files

Qualifications

• 1–3 years of family law or litigation experience preferred
• Family law experience is strongly preferred, though the firm is willing to train the right candidate with litigation exposure
• Comfortable in a fast-paced environment and interested in courtroom advocacy
• Strong writing, communication, and organizational skills
• Ability to work independently and manage deadlines effectively
• Professional, assertive, and client-focused demeanor
• Calm under pressure and comfortable handling conflict professionally

Technical Skills

Candidates should be comfortable using:

• Microsoft Word and Excel
• PDF editing software
• Electronic filing systems
• Digital document management platforms
• Slack and other communication tools
• AI tools such as Claude and similar technology resources
