Plan Check Engineer – Office of Building Safety Job Summary The Plan Check Engineer performs plan examination to ensure compliance with building codes, laws, and regulations for a variety of residential and commercial projects. The incumbent assists in permit processing, collaborates with field inspectors, and provides guidance on code-related issues. Key Responsibilities Perform independent plan examinations for industrial, commercial, and residential structures to determine code compliance. Check complex plans and calculations for earthquake, wind load, and structural requirements. Conduct independent analysis as required. Respond to inquiries from architects, engineers, contractors, and owners regarding building, mechanical, plumbing, electrical code requirements, and structural considerations. Verify plans for non‑structural items such as occupancy classification, egress, accessibility, energy conservation, green building, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical codes. Conduct field inspections and advise Field Inspectors on structural and other code issues. Train technical staff to check plans for completeness. Prepare reports, correspondence, records, and files related to plan‑check activities. Coordinate plan reviews with other departments as necessary. Stay informed about building codes, construction methods, and materials. Participate in professional group meetings to stay abreast of trends and innovations. Perform related duties as assigned. Typical Qualifications Experience: Two (2) years responsible experience performing structural and architectural plan‑check reviews. Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; major coursework in civil or structural engineering, architecture, or related field. License or Certificate: Professional registration as an Architect, Civil Engineer, or Structural Engineer in California. International Code Council (ICC) Plans Examiner Certification within 12 months of appointment. Valid California Driver’s License. Desired Experience: Civil and/or structural engineering background. Special Requirements Physical abilities: sit and/or stand for long periods, repetitive keyboarding, reach, squat, lift and carry up to 25 pounds, travel to various locations within and outside the city.
