Departmental Overview UC Berkeley School of Law (Berkeley Law) is one of the nation's great centers for legal education, ever exploring and pushing new intellectual boundaries while tackling urgent, real-world issues. Position Summary The Director of Graduate Admissions for Outreach and Recruitment is essential for the development and success of key initiatives and graduate programs in the Admissions Office of Berkeley Law. This position designs and administers a wide range of domestic and global outreach and recruitment programs for the law school and ensures the integration of those programs within the larger enrollment management strategy for the school. This position evaluates applicants, including the most complex admissions cases, and makes recommendations for policy changes or improvements. Reporting to the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, the Director of Graduate Admissions for Outreach and Recruitment serves as a technical leader responsible for the design and implementation of domestic and global recruitment strategies for the Master of Laws (LL.M.), Doctor of the Science of Law (J.S.D.), and other current and future graduate law programs. This position is responsible for complex project management, represents office interests to law school leadership and other departments, and maintains supervisory responsibilities over professional staff. The Director of Graduate Admissions for Outreach and Recruitment proposes and revises policies related to outreach programming and recruitment, coordinates with the Director of Admissions Operations to align systems with recruitment goals, and leads yield management programming to enroll the strongest and most diverse class. Responsibilities Outreach, Recruitment & Engagement Represents Berkeley Law, specifically the Admissions and Financial Aid Office, at events, both domestically and abroad, as assigned in consultation with the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid. Represents the school at highly visible and high-stakes events. Speaks publicly about the school and its graduate law programs, integrating information from across a wide range of law school departments, centers, and initiatives. Develops and leads the law schools outreach program in support of its graduate law degree programs, builds relationships with domestic and foreign legal education institutions, publicizing visits, planning, executing and attending events, etc. Other outreach as assigned, such as online applicant information sessions, other video presentations, evening events, etc. Formulates strategy and develops plans for a complex suite of outreach and recruitment programs and yield events. Designs and implements graduate law admissions, outreach, and recruitment programs, including those for the LL.M., J.S.D., and future graduate programs. Implements those plans with minimal direction, managing direct report(s) as needed, and leveraging existing or new resources and technology, Partners with other departments, faculty, staff, and alumni to create outreach and yield-enhancing programs, and to understand and respond to questions and/or concerns. Evaluates programming and makes recommendations for changes. Plans, manages and implements a large portfolio of events to enhance recruitment and yield, admitted student related events, and other related activities. Plans and manages online Admitted Student Experience, and similar initiatives. This work includes soliciting volunteers, managing portal and system updates with IST, managing all logistics in coordination with other law school departments, and tracking and collecting data to report on the efficacy of the program and to suggest improvements. Leads development of other strategic initiatives and partnerships to enhance outreach and recruitment. Strategic Recruitment Initiatives Evaluates the effectiveness of the law schools outreach and recruitment programming, considering admissions/enrollment goals, financial aid/scholarships, number of applicants, acceptance rate, and yield rate. Prepares annual and other reports as requested to represent progress toward goals in these areas, and other indices of success or challenge. Refines or revises existing programs, and develops new ones, to reach enrollment goals. Makes effective use of software tools to incorporate data into these core functions. Identifies new tools or systems to assist or improve this work. Analyzes surveys and other tools to understand weaknesses and opportunities. Conducts research and works to develop the relationships necessary to understand the highly competitive law school enrollment market and our position within it. Identifies and cultivates new partnerships to enhance yield efforts. Application Review & Evaluation Screens applicants and uses professional judgment when reviewing a large volume of applications for admission to Berkeley Law's graduate law degree programs, including the LL.M., J.S.D., and future graduate programs. Assesses the most difficult and complex admissions cases, specifically those involving intricate foreign legal credentials, and provides guidance and assistance to other experienced admissions specialists. Scholarship Oversight Evaluates the effectiveness of the graduate law admissions scholarship programs, considering general admissions/enrollment goals, available aid, number of applicants, acceptance rate, and matriculation rate. Makes effective use of software tools to incorporate data into these core functions. Leads the design, planning and implementation of the application review and selection process for initial (non-reconsideration) merit- based aid. Makes policy or process changes to achieve the overall goals of the unit. Develops timeline and criteria for reviewing applicants for initial aid eligibility, and consults with the Assistant Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid and other internal stakeholders to determine strategy and budget, fund allocation, and comprehensive enrollment goals Communication Strategy Represents the Law School and its graduate law degree programs, including the LL.M., J.S.D., and future graduate programs as it relates to developed expertise in best practices for student outreach, communication and program design strategy that enhances yield, and the law schools interaction with domestic and foreign legal education institutions Provides guidance to other specialists in those areas of expertise. Responds to inquiries about our programs or initiatives. Serves as the lead to develop and implement communication plans for prospective and admitted students. Partners with the Communications Department, in collaboration with the Director of Admissions and Operations and the Director of Admissions for J.D. Outreach and Recruitment, to create digital and printed materials tailored to support communication and outreach strategies for the graduate law programs at Berkeley Law. Supervision Responsible for the employment/selection, training, development, performance management and evaluation, counseling, and discipline of assigned employee(s). Prioritizes and delegates tasks to achieve unit goals and enhance yield. Serves as technical leader of outreach and recruitment programs for the graduate law programs, including the LL.M., J.S.D., and future graduate programs; provides direction and guidance on complex issues, policies, and procedures. Engages in professional development and training opportunities in areas of international admissions and recruiting, communications and marketing, and other related areas. Performs other duties within the scope of this classification as assigned. Required Qualifications Advanced knowledge of project management including program design, implementation, and evaluation. Advanced knowledge and experience working with a diverse student population as it relates to LL.M. admissions, law school admissions, and international student recruitment. Advanced knowledge and understanding of UC Berkeley, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to prospective students and the public and/or the ability to learn. Advanced and comprehensive knowledge of academic programs, including curricula, admissions requirements, and financial aid programs, at colleges/universities and specifically at UC Berkeley and/or the ability to learn. Ability to work efficiently, and strong organizational skills with demonstrated ability to prioritize work with demanding timeframes and deadlines. Advanced knowledge of tertiary-level foreign credentials, secondary school records, and knowledge of major educational systems of the world. Excellent interpersonal skills and experience in working effectively with diverse students, and on-campus and off-campus professionals in a higher education setting. Excellent organizational skills with a strong ability to prioritize and multi-task. Excellent writing and verbal communication skills with strong attention to detail. Advanced knowledge of data management and reporting including CRM systems, Tableau and/or similar data monitoring/visualization software. Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint with the ability to learn new systems. Familiarity with relevant federal regulations, compliance and reporting for awarding gift aid awards. Must be able to travel up to 25% during Fall outreach season (September-December). Some night and weekend work may be required. Preferred Qualifications Advanced ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with schools, universities, community organizations, and other institutions. Advanced ability to develop recruitment programs, and design effective materials. Advanced knowledge of admissions requirements for campus/school/college, including mitigating circumstances/bases for exceptions and/or the ability to learn. Advanced skills to develop the school's/college's strategic recruitment plans, designing outreach and recruitment programs and materials that will attract and enroll top candidates to the school/college, including students from under-represented groups. Education / Training Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training Progressive experience working in admissions and specializing in outreach and recruitment efforts (Preferred) Experience designing and implementing outreach and recruitment programs for admissions (Preferred) Experience with reviewing and assessing admissions applications (Preferred) Experience working in admissions for a law school (Preferred) J.D degree (Preferred) Licenses / Certifications Professional Certificate in College Admissions Counseling or equivalent (Preferred) Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation & Benefits website. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions, including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience. The budgeted annual range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $100,000 - $118,000. This is an exempt, monthly-paid position. This is a full-time (40 hours/week) Career position eligible for UC benefits. Driving Required Required to hold a valid driver's license, have a driving record that is in accordance with local policies/procedures, and/or enroll in the California Employer Pull Notice Program. The essential functions of this position do not require driving as a regular job duty. The position involves seasonal travel, which typically runs from mid-September through mid-November. During this period, most, if not all, travel to event destinations will generally be accomplished by commercial air travel and local public transportation, rideshare services, or other alternative transportation methods, rather than by driving. Accordingly, operating a motor vehicle is not considered an essential function of this position except in rare or unforeseen circumstances. Other Information This position is eligible for up to 1 day/week of remote work within the United States. Exact arrangements are determined in partnership with your supervisor to meet role responsibilities and department needs and are subject to change. This is not a visa opportunity. This position does not include sponsorship of a new consular H-1B visa petition that would require payment of the $100,000 supplemental fee.
