Job Title: Mechanical & Robotics Technician

Job Description

The Mechanical & Robotics Technician leads a team of service technicians in the installation, maintenance, and repair of automated packaging, robotics, and distribution equipment within a large-scale operations facility. This role designs solutions for complex technical problems, manages maintenance projects, and plays a key part in training and mentoring both internal and contract technicians. The position combines hands-on technical work with leadership responsibilities to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of conveyor systems, robotics, and control systems.

Responsibilities

• Promote and maintain a safe working environment by consistently following all safety procedures and encouraging safe work practices among the team.
• Lead, guide, and mentor service technicians and contract technicians, providing technical direction and on-the-job training.
• Maintain, troubleshoot, and repair all conveyor systems and associated automated material handling equipment in the facility.
• Install, maintain, and troubleshoot relay logic, ladder diagrams, and a wide range of control components including photo-eyes, motor starters, limit switches, proximity sensors, and solenoids.
• Lead and audit preventative maintenance procedures to ensure all equipment receives timely and effective maintenance.
• Develop and implement training plans for service technicians to enhance their technical skills and knowledge of equipment and safety standards.
• Create, manage, and close out work orders, accurately documenting labor hours, equipment details, maintenance actions, and parts used.
• Develop work plans and strategies for emergency repair of critical assets to minimize downtime and maintain operational continuity.
• Support and collaborate with the Operations Maintenance team by contributing to the design of solutions for difficult mechanical, electrical, and control-related problems.
• Maintain a positive and collaborative working relationship across the operations facility, including coordination with various internal stakeholders and external vendors.
• Utilize a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) to track maintenance activities, prioritize work, and manage work order backlogs, when applicable.
• Apply knowledge of Material Handling Equipment (MHE) safety standards and Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) guidelines when performing maintenance and repairs.
• Use PC-based tools, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook, to communicate, document work, and generate reports as needed.
• Lift and move parts and tools weighing up to 49 pounds, and perform tasks that require standing and walking for shifts of up to 12 hours, as needed.
• Travel up to approximately 20% of the time, as required by operational needs.

Essential Skills

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Ability to work flexible schedules, shifts, and areas, including weekends, nights, and holidays as required.
• At least 1 year of experience using PCs, including Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Hands-on experience maintaining and troubleshooting conveyor systems or similar automated equipment.
• Ability to install, maintain, and troubleshoot relay logic, ladder diagrams, and control components such as photo-eyes, motor starters, limit switches, proximity sensors, and solenoids.
• Capability to perform repetitive bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, twisting, sitting, standing, and walking as part of daily work.
• Ability to lift parts and tools averaging 20 pounds and occasionally up to 49 pounds.
• Sufficient dexterity and coordination for manual tasks involving picking, pinching, holding, grasping, and repetitive wrist and foot motion.
• Willingness and ability to travel up to approximately 20% as needed.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Associate degree or higher from a vocational school or college with a focus in the mechanical or electrical field.
• Approximately 5 years of experience working with automated conveyors and control systems.
• Approximately 5 years of experience with electrical and electronic principles, the National Electrical Code (NEC), and industrial electronics.
• Approximately 5 years of experience conducting preventative maintenance on industrial equipment.
• Approximately 5 years of experience reading and interpreting blueprints and electrical schematics.
• Approximately 5 years of experience working with Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) programs.
• Approximately 3 years of experience with work order management processes or systems.
• Approximately 4 years of apprenticeship or equivalent experience in the mechanical or electrical field.
• Previous leadership experience, including leading a team or acting as a lead technician.
• Previous experience managing or coordinating with vendors and external service providers.
• Experience with robotic maintenance in an industrial or distribution environment.
• Experience working with Material Handling Equipment (MHE) in accordance with OEM and safety standards.
• Experience using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
• Military experience is a plus, particularly in technical, mechanical, or electrical specialties.

Work Environment

This role is based in a large operations and distribution facility that utilizes automated packaging systems, conveyor systems, robotics, and advanced control technologies. Work frequently takes place around moving machinery, conveyor lines, and industrial electrical and control systems. The environment can include small or confined spaces, exposure to dust, fumes, and odors, and varying temperatures both indoors and outdoors, including hot and cold conditions. Noise and vibration are common in the facility, and you may spend long periods standing or walking on concrete floors, sometimes on wet or uneven surfaces. The position requires repetitive physical activities such as bending, crouching, kneeling, reaching, twisting, and manual handling of parts and tools. Standard industrial work attire appropriate for a maintenance and operations setting is expected, along with the use of required personal protective equipment. Work hours may include nights, weekends, and holidays, with occasional travel of up to approximately 20% depending on operational needs.

This is a Contract position based out of Channahon, IL.

The pay range for this position is $35.00 - $37.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
