Entry Level Environmental Scientist
This Environmental Scientist role combines extensive fieldwork with office-based environmental support on a wide variety of remediation and monitoring projects. The position focuses on groundwater and soil sampling, environmental monitoring, and oversight of Brownfields sites across New Jersey, with occasional work in New York. You will spend most of your time in the field conducting investigations and implementing remediation activities, while also supporting laboratory coordination, equipment maintenance, and supply management in the office. This opportunity offers exposure to large, complex projects, particularly at federal sites, with strong potential for professional growth, education, and mentorship from experienced project managers and licensed professionals.
Responsibilities
- Conduct groundwater sampling and monitoring activities in the field, following established protocols and safety procedures.
- Perform soil sampling at various sites, ensuring accurate collection, handling, and documentation of samples.
- Carry out environmental monitoring tasks, including groundwater and vapor intrusion monitoring, and record findings in a clear and organized manner.
- Support oversight of Brownfields sites, assisting with site inspections, data collection, and implementation of environmental remediation activities.
- Participate in chemical injection activities as part of environmental remediation efforts, adhering to safety and regulatory requirements.
- Spend approximately 70% of work time in the field at project sites across New Jersey, with occasional assignments in New York that may last from a day or two up to several weeks.
- Perform office-based tasks for approximately 30% of work time, including checking lab samples, reviewing sample documentation, and coordinating with laboratories.
- Maintain and clean field equipment and shop areas to ensure all tools and instruments remain in good working condition.
- Order and track supplies and materials needed for field and office work, helping to keep projects running smoothly and efficiently.
- Collaborate closely with a team of office staff and field professionals, sharing information and supporting project goals in a highly cooperative environment.
- Communicate clearly with team members, project managers, and other stakeholders regarding project status, field conditions, and any issues encountered.
- Follow all applicable environmental, health, and safety standards, including OSHA and HAZWOPER guidelines when applicable.
- Contribute to environmental compliance efforts by accurately documenting field activities and maintaining organized records.
- Use basic environmental engineering and science principles to support environmental remediation and monitoring projects.
- Assist with basic data review and preparation of information for reports or internal documentation as needed.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally with team members and other stakeholders.
- Hands-on experience or academic background in environmental science, including groundwater sampling and soil sampling.
- Ability to perform environmental remediation support tasks such as chemical injections and site monitoring.
- Familiarity with environmental monitoring and environmental compliance concepts.
- Capacity to work predominantly in the field, including long days at project sites and travel to various locations within New Jersey and occasionally New York.
- Ability to organize, handle, and check laboratory samples accurately and maintain detailed records.
- Willingness to perform equipment cleaning, shop organization, and supply ordering as part of daily responsibilities.
- Comfort working in a collaborative, team-oriented environment with open communication
Job Type & Location
This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bridgewater, NJ.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $26.44 - $31.25/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
