Student Assistant for Book Publication and Marketing Job Location: CU DenverCollege of Arts & Media/ This position is fully remote. Purpose: Dissemination of scholarly research is among the core charges of Research 1 universities, like the University of Colorado Denver. ThisEURēCA! Assistant for Book Publication and Marketing position will design, produce, and distribute a new book about the rise of Hollywood studio orchestras and the innovators who changed the movie industry forever. The team will consist of theEURēCA! Assistant, faculty mentor, book authors (2), copyeditor, and open-education resource publishers. Position Description: Collaborating with Dr. Mark Rabideau (senior associate dean, CAM/professor of music, author of two books, and editor of 17 more), theEURēCA! Assistant will design, typeset, and produce a digital and print-ready manuscript and marketing materials for a book about the rise of Hollywood Studios. The book’s foreword was authored by composer John Williams, an introductory chapter was written by Pulitzer-nominee Walter Chaw, and contains 21 interviews with some of Hollywood’s most prominent studio musicians. The book will be distributed as an open-education resource through The College Music Society, the largest collection of music professoriate in North America. Duties and Responsibilities: Design and Typeset a publication-ready book layout Create interior design, including Determine page size and margins Select fonts and typography Place figures, tables, and images, including identifying and placing photographs Create Cover Design in collaboration with authors, including: Sharing initial design ideas Embracing feedback Making revisions Gaining final approvals Make Final Edits based on external proofreader recommendations, including Typographical mistakes Formatting inconsistencies Pagination issues Incorrect captions, references, or indexes Indexing Prepare index ISBN Descriptions Deliver Final Production Files, Printing, and Manufacturing Identify a self-publishing partner for print format Prepare print-ready PDFs and conduct quality assurance checks Prepare E-book formats (ePub, Kindle, Web-based, etc.) and conduct quality assurance checks Deliver E-book to digital publishing partner Develop Marketing, including: Social media posts Ad copy and design Skills and Knowledge Gained: Students will apply knowledge gained through coursework in illustration, graphic design, and digital content creation to a real-world publishing project. They will deepen their understanding of visual communication, typography, editorial processes, intellectual property law, and audience engagement by contributing to the creation of a scholarly publication. The experience will demonstrate how concepts learned in the classroom are integrated into the full lifecycle of producing and distributing a professional book. Students will develop hands‑on publishing and design skills commonly used in the book publishing, media, marketing, and creative industries, including: Book design and professional typesetting Interior page layout and typography selection Image selection, placement, and visual asset management Copyediting and proofreading implementation Index preparation and publication organization Metadata management, including ISBNs, descriptions, and keywords Print production and quality assurance procedures E-book formatting and digital publishing workflows Marketing content development, including social media campaigns and advertising materials Collaboration with authors, editors, and publishing partners throughout the production process These experiences closely mirror responsibilities found in professional publishing houses, marketing agencies, and media production organizations. The student will receive individualized mentorship and experiential training from Dr. Mark Rabideau, a senior associate dean, professor, author, and editor with extensive publishing experience. Through participation in the complete publication process, the student will receive specialized training in: Professional book production workflows Publishing industry standards and best practices Design review and revision cycles Print and digital publishing platforms Editorial quality control procedures Marketing strategy for educational and scholarly publications Collaboration with authors, proofreaders, and publishing partners This project-based training provides an immersive learning environment that simulates professional publishing and creative‑industry practice. Students will strengthen numerous transferable professional skills, including: Project management and deadline management Written and visual communication Professional collaboration and teamwork Receiving and implementing feedback Attention to detail and quality assurance Creative problem‑solving Decision‑making and independent judgment Client and stakeholder communication Professional editing and document management Organization and workflow coordination Adaptability throughout iterative design and revision processes In addition, students will build a professional portfolio featuring tangible, published work. Overall, this experience provides a rare opportunity for a student to participate in all phases of a high-profile publishing project, from manuscript development through production, distribution, and marketing. Minimum Qualifications: Experience with Graphic Design and Page Layout Software Proficiency in Adobe InDesign and familiarity with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, Canva, or similar design tools. Ability to create professional page layouts, prepare print-ready files, and develop visual content. Strong Understanding of Typography and Visual Design Principles Knowledge of typography, page composition, image placement, color theory, and visual hierarchy. Ability to make design decisions that enhance readability and aesthetic appeal. Excellent Attention to Detail Demonstrated ability to identify and correct typographical errors, formatting inconsistencies, pagination issues, and other editorial concerns. Commitment to producing accurate, high-quality work. Ability to Collaborate and Incorporate Feedback Willingness to work closely with authors, editors, proofreaders, and publishing partners. Demonstrated ability to receive feedback professionally and make revisions based on stakeholder input. Project Management and Organizational Skills Ability to manage multiple deadlines, track revisions, organize digital assets, and complete projects independently. Strong time-management skills and attention to workflow processes. Preferred Qualifications: Academic backgrounds that would be well-suited: Digital Design major Strong aural and written communication skills. Experience working with long‑form documents, research projects, publications, or academic materials is preferred. Interest in Publishing, Marketing, or Media Production Experience creating social media content, promotional materials, or marketing campaigns is desirable.
