LICENSED PRACTICAL NURSE

Minimum Qualifications: Associates Degree in Nursing or a related field supplemented by two (2) years of experience as a Licensed Practical Nurse; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

Specific License or Certification Required: Must possess and maintain a valid Georgia driver's license; must possess and maintain a state of Georgia license as a Licensed Practical Nurse.

Specific Knowledge, Skills, or Abilities: Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in performance of the essential functions and learn, comprehend, and apply all county or departmental policies, practices, and procedures necessary to function effectively in the position.

Examination: The examination will consist of an evaluation of education and experience, accomplished by analysis of the application. Purpose of Classification: The purpose of this classification is to perform duties related to providing prescribed medical treatment and patient care to County residents including collecting patient's specimens, administering therapeutic medication injections, completing nursing assessments, intervening in and managing crises, and tracking patients for immunization. Licensed Practical Nurse is distinguished from Licensed Practical Nurse, Senior in that the former does not supervise assigned staff but provides basic patient care to County residents, whereas the latter supervises assigned Licensed Practical Nurses and support staff in addition to providing patient care to County residents.

Includes exercising discretion in determining data classification, and in referencing such analysis to established standards for the purpose of recognizing actual or probable interactive effects and relationships.

Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide specialized or professional level counseling and medical treatment to others that typically requires certification. Ability to assign, review, plan and coordinate the work of other employees and to maintain standards. Ability to provide instruction to other employees and to act on employee problems. Ability to recommend the discipline of employees. Ability to prepare employee performance evaluations.

Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Specific equipment includes computers and peripherals, scales, measuring boards, glucose machines, stethoscopes, ophthalmoscopes, otoscopes, medical equipment and supplies and pharmacology supplies.

Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information such as patient records, health and medical information, lab results, laws and regulations, protocols, policies and procedures and a variety of correspondence.

Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; the ability to calculate decimals and percentages; the ability to utilize principles of fractions; and the ability to interpret graphs.

Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to apply principles of influence systems, such as motivation, incentive, and leadership, and to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to resolve problems.

Situational Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental, or subjective criteria, as opposed to that which is clearly measurable or verifiable.
