Surgical Technician

Surgical Technician for Operating Room – NIH, Bethesda, MD Schedule Schedule is Monday‑Friday 7am‑3:30pm/ 3pm‑11:30pm with intermittent on‑call on evenings, nights, weekends and holidays as needed. Qualifications Requires 2-3 years of recent acute care hospital operating room experience. Certified BLS, Certified Surgical Tech. What’s In it for Medical & Dental 401k Short‑ & Long‑Term Disability Life Insurance Key Responsibilities The role works through the full patient experience, pre‑procedure, intra‑procedure, post‑procedure. Assists physician where needed; executes preparation of instruments, equipment, and operating room. Communicates treatment plan with supervising medical staff member, verifies correct patient, correct surgery, and surgery site with the surgical team in the OR. Assures that all drugs off and on the sterile field are labeled and that tumescent labeling is accurate and legible. Cleans and sterilizes the operating room and instruments. Explains treatment procedures, medications, and Physician's instructions to patients and caregivers. Assists in discharging patients to caregivers. Assists in returning all patient phone messages. Audits patient records. Schedules follow‑up appointments with patients. Key Skills/Qualifications Ability to problem solve and clarify necessary steps of logic and reasoning in a professional manner. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions in written, oral, diagram or schedule form. Ability to write reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from patients, caregivers, physicians and staff. Must be familiar with MS Office, including Excel. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure. Able to demonstrate knowledge of surgical and medical instruments. Has a thorough knowledge of varied instruments and instrument trays used in the operating room.
