JOB SUMMARY

Under the general direction of the Director of Nursing, the Trauma/Stroke Coordinator is responsible for assisting leadership to maintain trauma center care verification and designation for Effingham Hospital. Duties include

data collection, abstracting clinical records, utilizing registry data to synthesize reports to support performance improvement and injury prevention initiatives and track effectiveness of implemented programs. The Trauma/ Stroke Coordinator is also responsible for providing both routine and ad hoc reports of statistics and QI filters. Additionally, the incumbent reviews and analyzes national and local information and assists with the development of performance improvement plans. The Trauma/Stroke Coordinator utilizes best practice and evidence-based care in accordance with Joint Commission, federal, state, and local guidelines, organizational and departmental policies and procedures. The Trauma/ Stroke Coordinator communicate with patients, families, medical staff, all departments, and outside agencies to achieve organizational effectiveness while maintaining confidentiality. The position requires self-motivation, critical thinking, assessment skills, creativity, and capabilities to function in an autonomous charge nurse role within a fast pace and dynamic environment. As Trauma/Stroke Coordinator, the incumbent shall recommend and provide ongoing staff education and development with regard to trauma and stroke. She/he shall assist in the development of trauma/ stroke related required annual competencies for staff members.

STANDARDS OF PERFORMANCE

  1. Participates in the development and planning of goals and objectives related to trauma care.
  2. Coordinates with medical director, hospital administration, and clinicians, to assess the need for policies, procedures, and protocols relating to the care of trauma patients.
  3. Assists with the development of policies and procedures based on current literature and best practices in other health care organizations and surveys.
  4. Serves as the liaison in representing the Trauma Program on various hospital and community committees, to enhance and foster optimal trauma care management.
  5. Assists in the development and management of Trauma plans and initiatives, to meet all statewide trauma system regulatory requirements.
  6. Coordinates preparation for statewide trauma system designation site visit.
  7. Develops and fosters collaborative relationships with all hospital departments to facilitate and support quality trauma and stroke care.
  8. Participates in state and regional trauma care activities.
  9. Monitors national and statewide trends in trauma/ stroke care.
  10. Responds to trauma/stroke team activations that occurs and function in whatever role is necessary, to assist the team in the care of patients.
  11. Serves as resources for the hospital staff regarding trauma/stroke care issues.
  12. Assists leadership in fostering a positive workplace and promotes synergy in a calm environment.
  13. Assists leadership ensure that nursing staff provides trauma/stroke patient care in accordance with hospital policies and procedure, established nursing standards of care and practice, and as defined by the state of Georgia.
  14. Assists leadership to coordinate functions of clinical nursing, assessment, patient education, and medical record documentation with trauma/stroke patients
  15. Actively participates in continuing education.
  16. Assists leadership to provide for internal control monitor mechanisms to ensure and enforce compliance.
  17. Continuously and actively participates in quality improvement and risk management programs at the unit level.
  18. Abstracts and reports trauma/stroke cases per guidelines of the Trauma/Stroke Registration.
  19. Audits records of all patients who are DOA within 24 hours of death.
  20. Serves as Chair of the Trauma Team.
  21. Successfully completes the Trauma Registrar Mentorship Program.
  22. Contributes to staff development by providing trauma/stroke related in-service education.
  23. Other duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Level of Education: Education level equivalent to completion high school, and a completion of an accredited registered nursing program. Prefer college courses leading to a Bachelor’s Degree.

Formal Training: Registered Nursing program.

Licensure, Certification, Registration: Must have and maintain an unencumbered State of Georgia Registered Nurses License, Basic Healthcare BLS, ACLS, TNCC, NRP, NIHSS certification and PALS. CEN Preferred.

Work Experience: Three years of nursing experience in trauma/emergency care. Supervisory experience is preferred.

Skills and Abilities: Must have the ability to plan, organize, supervise, and coordinate programs and plans in an Emergency Department, and function as a member of a multi-disciplinary team on a daily basis. Must have the ability to function in a highly complex environment; interpret, analyze and present data of a complex nature.
