Job Description PURPOSE AND SCOPE: It is the responsibility of the teaching faculty to provide thelearning activities and support that will lead to the achievementof the course objectives and contribute to the educationalenvironment of the college and the community. Primaryresponsibilities are to plan, develop and teach courses within thecurriculum in a manner that facilitates student learning. Adjunct faculty are hired in a part-time capacity on asemester-by-semester basis, contingent upon the needs of theSystem. Lone Star College accepts application material year-roundfrom qualified applicants willing to teach on a part-time basis. Adjunct (part-time) faculty hiring is based on student demand. Weoffer day, evening, and weekend classes. Classes are offered atvarious times and locations during the academic year. As a rule,adjunct faculty may teach a maximum of five classes per academicyear. ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: Teaches ESOL courses at a variety of times and locations Creates engaging lessons that promote student involvement andapplication of the material. Submits required college reports and forms in a timelymanner Utilizes a course syllabus for each course, followingestablished institutional guidelines Meets with and advises students either before or after class orby appointment, electronic communication, or other appropriatemethods Evaluates students to measure their progress in achievingcourse objectives and informs students in a timely manner of theirprogress Maintains professional relationships with students, colleagues,and the community Attends meetings, trainings, and orientations as required Responsible for other reasonable related duties asassigned KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: Mastery of course content Demonstrated leadership skills; Style that emphasizescollaboration, teamwork, and facilitation Excellent oral and written communication skills andinterpersonal skills Ability to appreciate alternative viewpoints; Ability to workeffectively with a wide variety of people Demonstrates interest in interdisciplinary teaching, servicelearning, learning technologies, course development, and adultlearning methodologies including collaborative learning, learningcommunities and distance learning Commitment to academic excellence, exceptional service andproviding a dynamic climate for life-long learning Demonstrated ability to develop and implement instructionalapproaches such as service learning/civic engagement, learningcommunities, and the effective use of technology Ability to use effective strategies to engage students in theirlearning PHYSICAL ABILITIES: The work is sedentary. Typically, the employee sits comfortably todo the work. However, there may be some walking; standing; bending;carrying of light items, such as papers, books, or small parts; ordriving an automobile. No special physical demands are required toperform the work. WORK SCHEDULE AND CONDITIONS: Equipment used includes, PC workstation running on a LAN in aMicrosoft Windows environment, calculator, phone and other generaloffice equipment, and any specialized equipment standard within thediscipline/industry Interface with internal and external contacts as needed to carry out the functions of the position Work is performed in a climate-controlled classroom and/or labenvironment with minimal exposure to safety hazards Hours will vary depending on class time; Instructors arerequired to meet with classes at all scheduled times and beavailable to students outside of class instruction REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree or higher in TESOL/TESL/TEFL, Second LanguageAcquisition, Linguistics, or English where English is taught as aforeign language OR Bachelor's degree or higher with 12 hours ofcoursework in TESOL/TESL/TEFL, Second Language Acquisition, &Linguistics OR Bachelor's degree or higher withsecondary/postsecondary TSEOL/TESL/TEFL certificate, CELTA, orDELTA OR Bachelor's degree or higher with 3 years of ESOL teachingexperience at secondary/postsecondary level OR Bachelor's degree orhigher with evidence of 12 hours of coursework in at least 3 of thefollowing: language teaching methodologies the nature of language/languages (e.g., introduction tolinguistics) the structure of English (e.g., syntax, phonology, morphology,discourse) second language acquisition intercultural communication (e.g., sociolinguistics,cross-cultural studies) practicum experience Salary $55.44 per contact hour.
