Facilities Maintenance Technician

Position Summary:

The Facilities Maintenance Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair and overall upkeep of Farmington City buildings. This position requires broad handyman expertise and the ability to perform a wide range of maintenance tasks including but not limited to; preventative maintenance, troubleshooting building issues and equipment, coordinating repairs, and ensuring all facilities remain safe, clean, and functional.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Troubleshoot and repair general building systems, including basic plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, drywall, painting, flooring, doors and hardware.
• Routinely inspect buildings, checking for functionality and safety.
• Identify maintenance needs and coordinate specialized repairs as needed.
• Respond to routine and emergency maintenance requests in a timely manner.
• Maintain safety, cleanliness, and functionality of buildings and equipment.
• Install, assemble and repair building fixtures, furnishings, and equipment.
• Maintain maintenance records, work orders and inventory of tools and supplies.
• Operate and maintain equipment and tools in a safe OSHA compliant manner.
• Assist with facility improvements, renovations, and other projects as assigned.
• Work with Department Heads to establish and maintain maintenance budgets and limits.
• Remove snow from walkways around city buildings and various city properties.
• Other duties as assigned by the Assistant City Manager

Knowledge of:

• General building maintenance principles, practices and procedures.
• Basic principles of plumbing, electrical, HVAC, carpentry, painting, drywall and general construction.
• Equipment, materials, tools and methods used for building maintenance and repair.

Skilled in:

• Troubleshooting and diagnosing maintenance issues.
• Prioritizing and managing multiple tasks across various facilities.
• Safely operating maintenance equipment, vehicles and tools.

Ability to:

• Work independently with minimal supervision while using sound judgement.
• Identify maintenance needs and determine appropriate repair methods.
• Read and interpret manuals, blueprints, diagrams and work orders.

Minimum Qualifications:

• 18 years of age or older.
• A valid Utah Driver's license.
• Off Highway Vehicle Certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.
• High school diploma or GED.
• Two (2) to four (4) years' experience working in construction, carpentry, plumbing, electrical or HVAC experience.

An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Must pass BCI and fingerprinting background within 60 days of hire.

Physical Requirements:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands and arms in extended periods, climb ladders, maintain balance, and use hands and fingers with dexterity to operate tools, equipment and machinery. The employee must also regularly communicate effectively through speaking and hearing.


The employee must frequently lift, carry, push or pull materials and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift, carry or pull up to 50 pounds independently.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus to safely perform maintenance and repair work.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings throughout City facilities and grounds. The employee is frequently exposed to hazards associated with building maintenance activities, including electrical systems, HVAC equipment, plumbing systems, power tools, and mechanical equipment. The employee may also be exposed to moving mechanical parts, wet or humid conditions, dust, fumes, chemicals, elevated work areas and varying weather conditions. Noise level is typically moderate but may occasionally be loud depending on the work being performed and the equipment in use.

Personal Protection Equipment:

The employee is required to use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as necessary to safely perform assigned duties and in accordance with applicable laws, regulations and city policies. Required PPE may include but is not limited to: safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, hard hats, steel-toe footwear, high visibility vests, masks and fall protection equipment.
