Accountant / Bookkeeper

Location: Alexandria, VA (Hybrid)

Schedule: Full-Time, Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–5:00 PM

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Accountant / Bookkeeper to manage day-to-day accounting operations, payroll coordination, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and financial reporting for a nonprofit organization. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting fundamentals, excellent attention to detail, and hands-on experience with Sage Intacct.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain accounting systems, controls, and financial procedures.
  • Compile, analyze, and process financial information for accurate accounting records.
  • Ensure timely and accurate entry of financial data.
  • Coordinate payroll activities and serve as the liaison with the organization's payroll provider.
  • Collect and review employee timesheets and payroll-related information.
  • Record payroll summaries and journal entries into the general ledger.
  • Manage the full accounts payable process, including:
  • Reviewing, coding, and processing invoices and payment requests.
  • Maintaining accurate vendor and AP records.
  • Reconciling AP accounts and closing AP monthly.
  • Manage accounts receivable functions, including:
  • Processing and recording incoming payments.
  • Maintaining accurate AR records from membership and operational databases.
  • Resolving billing discrepancies and responding to inquiries.
  • Assist with preparation and distribution of 1099s and other tax-related documentation.
  • Support monthly close activities and financial reporting.
  • Work with external auditors and assist during annual audits.
  • Assist with onboarding paperwork and other HR-related administrative functions.
  • Participate in special projects and perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of accounting, bookkeeping, or nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Strong experience managing both Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable.
  • Experience coordinating payroll and working with third-party payroll providers.
  • Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct is required.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Experience with general ledger maintenance, reconciliations, and month-end close.
  • Knowledge of 1099 reporting and basic tax documentation.
  • Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines independently.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Nonprofit accounting experience.
  • Experience supporting audits and financial compliance requirements.
  • Exposure to HR onboarding or administrative support functions.
