Responsibilities Under general supervision and medical direction, performs respiratory care related procedures. Exercises judgment in accordance with the physician's treatment plan and within departmental policies. Scope of practice includes patient/family assessment and management, resource management, care facilitation, and discharge planning as required. Assesses resident condition, administers prescribed therapy and aerosolized medications, observes and records progress and response to therapy, including adverse reactions to drugs and therapy. Provides in-service training to residents, family members, and facility staff. Resident population is primarily adult and geriatric. Uses knowledge of growth and development appropriate to the resident\'s age to ensure care meets the resident\'s unique physical and psychological needs. Involves appropriate parties in assessment, treatment, and continuing care as needed. Initiates, monitors and maintains life support systems for residents in the skilled nursing facility. Performs airway care and maintenance. Manages artificial ventilator status per approved protocol. Maintains and troubleshoots mechanical ventilators. Participates in cardiopulmonary resuscitation procedures of bag ventilation and closed chest massage. Initiates, monitors and documents performance of various respiratory care modalities. Performs assessment of residents\' cardiopulmonary status using physical assessment, history, laboratory findings, radiological studies, pulmonary function testing, and professional judgment to formulate a respiratory care plan ordered by a physician. Performs various tasks prior to treating a resident: checks physician orders for completeness, ensures orders include diagnosis, ICD-10 code, type and duration of therapy, type and dosage of medication, FiO2 and frequency; reviews resident\'s chart for history and pertinent information to determine bedside precautions; observes and charts vital signs and breathing patterns; notifies supervisor of new starts and discontinued residents. Administers proper technical respiratory care procedures, dispenses medications appropriately, adjusts devices for optimal results, monitors respiratory rate and pattern, evaluates response to therapy, and documents pertinent information for the resident\'s nurse. Inspects and tests equipment, disassembles and reassembles as required, maintains supplies, and performs administrative duties and record‑keeping when needed. Disposes of equipment properly. Assists in emergency cardio-pulmonary resuscitation as part of the emergency team; CPR certification is required. Initiates, administers, evaluates response to, and documents all therapy modalities per departmental procedure and physician order, including intermittent positive pressure breathing, handheld nebulizers, chest physical therapy (percussion, vibration, breathing and cough retraining), deep tracheal suctioning, incentive spirometry, and sputum induction. Recognizes adverse reactions to therapy modalities and takes appropriate action. Documents all resident care services as part of the medical record. Accepts and transcribes verbal orders related to respiratory care procedures. Sets up, maintains and records log entries for oxygen and respiratory supplies and equipment. Instructs residents and family members on the rationale and methodology of each respiratory procedure to promote cooperation and understanding. Works toward set goals to achieve maximum rehabilitation potential. Attends internal and external educational programs and reads professional journals to maintain and enhance clinical competencies. Participates in interdisciplinary resident rounds and conferences to plan and evaluate care. Participates in quality assurance data collection as assigned. Responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of rehab services, adherence to the plan of care, department and patient schedules, and timely documentation. Participates in general equipment troubleshooting and quality control methods to optimize diagnostic equipment performance. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications * A Respiratory Therapist must have a high level of knowledge of respiratory therapy and practice through completion of an NBRC‑approved and accredited program and one year of clinical practice under medical direction. * Current Basic Cardiac Life Support certification and current State Licensure for a Respiratory Care Practitioner.
