Community Organizer

Affording Life is a national movement focused on the cost of living. We're launching in Pennsylvania, with more states coming in 2026. We bring neighbors together to learn: why rent, groceries, childcare, healthcare, and energy cost what they do, and real, tangible skills to save money right now. Our theory is simple. When neighbors gather and learn together about concrete things like the cost of living, they rediscover how much they have in common. That's where change starts. Community is the unit of change we're betting on. The Role We're hiring part-time Community Organizers in Pennsylvania, anchored in Reading and in the Lehigh Valley. You'll be the person who makes gatherings happen: finding hosts, booking spaces, inviting neighbors, running events where neighbors learn together, and following up so people come back with a friend. This is a ground-floor role in a movement that's just getting started. You'll work closely with our founding team and receive regular direction and support. As Affording Life grows, this role has a real path to grow with us. What You'll Do Plan and run 4 to 6 community gatherings per month in your region, using our three event formats: issue-education sessions, media-literacy workshops, benefits-navigation, and cost-savings tips & tricks events. Recruit attendees through local networks, community spaces, and one-on-one outreach. Find and book speakers and educators for gatherings, such as community college instructors, benefits counselors, and local small business owners. Secure gathering spaces where neighbors already spend time: coffee shops, bars, diners, libraries, and community rooms. Build relationships with local partners: libraries, churches, community centers, parent groups, and small businesses. Capture stories from gatherings (with attendee consent) that inform our content and show what neighbors are experiencing. Track attendance, follow-ups, and what's working, and share simple reports with the founding team. Give feedback that helps us refine a gathering model other states can replicate. Who You Are You've organized people before. Maybe professionally, maybe as a PTA lead, a church volunteer coordinator, a union member, or the neighbor who gets everyone to the block party. Formal organizing experience is a plus, not a requirement. You live in or near Reading or the Lehigh Valley and know your community. You're comfortable talking to strangers and making people feel welcome. You're not shy about making an ask. Inviting a professor to speak or asking a bar owner to host a Tuesday night gathering feels like an opportunity, not an imposition. You're reliable and organized. You follow through on details without being chased. You're comfortable taking direction and asking questions. We'll train you on our model and work alongside you. You're comfortable working with people from a broad spectrum of political views and making everyone feel welcome. This movement is for everyone. Spanish fluency is a plus, especially in Reading. Hours, Pay, and Structure Approximately 20 hours per week, with flexible scheduling. Evenings and occasional weekends are part of the job, since that's when neighbors can gather. $2,500-$4,000 per month, depending on experience. This is a consultant-style engagement (1099). It does not include health benefits or paid time off; the rate reflects that. You'll report to and be supported directly by Affording Life's founding team. #J-18808-Ljbffr
