Audiology 4th Year Extern

The Children's Cochlear Implant Center at UNC is seeking an audiology extern for its large pediatric cochlear implant clinic for the 2027-28 academic year. The Center has over 30 years of experience providing cochlear implants to children who are deaf and hard of hearing. It is a multidisciplinary team focused on family support, clinical research, and best practice for successful cochlear implant use. The externship is a specialized placement for those interested in pediatric cochlear implants. The extern will work as part of the pediatric implant team, assisting clinicians with cochlear implant evaluations, mappings, follow‑up booth testing, and counseling families pre‑ and post‑implantation. Exposure will be gained with all three major cochlear implant device manufacturers and with candidates for EAS and SSD. Responsibilities Assist in evaluating pediatric patients for cochlear implant candidacy. Participate in activation of cochlear implants and routine mapping appointments. Conduct routine audiologic assessments, including tympanometry, acoustic reflexes, otoacoustic emissions, and audiologic rehabilitation. Perform cochlear implant evaluations and rehabilitation, and assist in outcome evaluation. Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and contribute to clinical research when available. Qualifications Successfully completed all academic and clinical experience requirements of the first, second, and third years of an audiology program. Mastery of audiometry, tympanometry, and familiarity with cochlear implant hardware and implant software. Ability to work independently and as part of a team within a clinical setting. Clinical Opportunities Routine cochlear implant mapping and troubleshooting. Tympanometry, acoustic reflex testing, and otoacoustic emissions. Auditory rehabilitation (group or individualized). Exposure to pediatric, infant/toddler, and school‑age evaluations. Participation in research projects related to cochlear implant outcomes. Benefits Stipend provided. Flexible vacation days.
