Occupational Health Provider
The Occupational Health Provider delivers comprehensive occupational health services to On-site Employer team members. This role evaluates and treats occupational injuries and illnesses, provides medical oversight for occupational health programs, performs regulatory and employment-related examinations, and partners with nursing staff, case managers, Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety, and leadership to promote team member health, workplace safety, regulatory compliance, and safe return-to-work outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
The key responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Evaluate, diagnose, and treat occupational injuries and illnesses within the scope of practice and applicable licensure requirements.
- Provide medical direction and clinical oversight for occupational health programs and services.
- Conduct occupational health assessments, post-offer employment evaluations, DOT examinations, fit-for-duty examinations, and other regulatory or employer-required evaluations.
- Review, interpret, and act upon audiometric testing, spirometry results, vision screenings, drug testing results, and other occupational health surveillance findings.
- Develop treatment plans and determine appropriate work restrictions, accommodations, and return-to-work recommendations.
- Collaborate with Occupational Health Nurses, Lead Nurse Case Managers, and support staff to coordinate care and optimize case management outcomes.
- Provide medical consultation regarding workplace injuries, illnesses, health concerns, and occupational risk factors.
- Serve as a clinical resource for OSHA-related medical requirements, occupational health regulations, and industry best practices.
- Participate in injury prevention initiatives, workplace evaluations, ergonomic assessments, and safety programs as appropriate.
- Respond to workplace medical emergencies and provide care within the legal scope of practice.
- Refer team members to specialty care, imaging, therapy, or additional medical services when clinically appropriate.
- Communicate effectively with team members, managers, Human Resources, Environmental Health & Safety personnel, insurance carriers, and external healthcare providers while maintaining confidentiality.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation within the electronic medical record.
- Support medical surveillance programs, including hearing conservation, respiratory protection, and other occupational health initiatives.
- Participate in quality improvement, clinical outcome monitoring, and occupational health program development activities.
- Assist in developing and maintaining occupational health policies, procedures, and clinical protocols.
- Promote health education, injury prevention, wellness, and workplace safety initiatives throughout the organization.
Requirements
- Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), Nurse Practitioner (NP), or Physician Assistant (PA) degree from an accredited program required.
- Current Iowa licensure as a Physician, Nurse Practitioner, or Physician Assistant required.
- Occupational health, urgent care, emergency medicine, family medicine, sports medicine, orthopedic, or industrial medicine experience preferred.
- Experience treating musculoskeletal injuries and managing work-related conditions preferred.
- Experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment preferred.
Certifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- DOT Medical Examiner certification preferred or willingness to obtain.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.
- Medical Review Officer (MRO) certification preferred.
- Additional occupational medicine certifications and training preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of occupational medicine principles, workplace health and safety practices, and OSHA regulations.
- Understanding of workers' compensation processes, injury management, and return-to-work programs.
- Strong clinical assessment, diagnostic, and treatment planning skills.
- Ability to evaluate functional capacity and determine appropriate work restrictions and accommodations.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills with team members, leadership, healthcare providers, and external stakeholders.
- Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities while maintaining high standards of care and documentation.
- Knowledge of medical surveillance programs and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound clinical judgment.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and Microsoft Office applications.
- Commitment to quality improvement, evidence-based practice, and exceptional team member care.
Travel
- Occasional local travel may be required. Up to 10% travel may be necessary to support occupational health operations and training activities.
