Staff Psychologist (Suicide Prevention Coordinator)

The Suicide Prevention Coordinator at VA Long Beach serves Veterans at risk for suicide and supports suicide prevention initiatives across VALBHS as part of VA's public health approach to prevention. BASIC REQUIREMENTS Citizenship. Citizen of the United States. Education. Have a doctoral degree in psychology from a graduate program in psychology accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA), the Psychological Clinical Science Accreditation System (PCSAS), or the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA) at the time the program was completed. The specialty area of the degree must be consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. (Note: a degree in school psychology is not eligible.) OR Have a doctoral degree in any area of psychology and, in addition, successfully complete a re‑specialization program meeting conditions: (a) re‑specialization program completed in an APA or CPA accredited doctoral program; (b) specialty retrained consistent with the assignment. Documentation required. OR Have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionally‑accredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature. Internships. Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program accredited by APA or CPA at the time it was completed and consistent with the assignment. OR New VHA psychology internship programs applying for APA accreditation accepted if sanctioned by VHA Central Office and Office of Academic Affiliations at time of internship. OR VHA facilities that offered full‑time, one‑year pre‑doctoral internships prior to PL 96‑151 (pre‑1979) are acceptable. OR Applicants who completed an internship not accredited by APA or CPA may be considered eligible if they are currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty consistent with the assignment. Once board certified, the employee is required to maintain board certification. OR Applicants with doctoral degree 1951‑1978 may fulfill this requirement by having the equivalent of a one‑year supervised internship. A statement from the doctoral program may be required if not on transcript. Licensure. Applicants must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Board Certification. Those with unaccredited internships must be board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology. The board certificate must be current and the applicant must abide by continuing education requirements. Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA as a psychologist on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements. GRADE DETERMINATIONS GS-12 Staff Psychologist Experience. At least one year of creditable experience as a professional (postdoctoral) psychologist equivalent to GS‑11 and the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Wide range of professional psychological treatments or assessment methods for diverse patient populations. Design and implement effective treatment strategies. Incorporate new clinical procedures. Conduct research activities, including research design, implementation, documentation, and collaboration. GS-13 Staff Psychologist Experience. At least two years of experience as a professional (postdoctoral) psychologist, with at least one year at GS‑12 level, and the following Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Apply professional psychological treatments to full range of patient populations. Provide professional advice and consultation in related areas. Knowledge of clinical research literature. The full performance level of this position is 13. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of 12 to 13. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Light lifting (under 15 pounds); light carrying (under 15 pounds); reaching above shoulder; hearing (aid permitted); emotional stability. The Staff Psychologist should be physically capable of prolonged movement and capable of reading patient records, documenting all clinical encounters in the computerized record system, and communicating clearly and efficiently in English. #J-18808-Ljbffr
