Transportation Supervisor

The Transportation Supervisor oversees the day-to-day operations of IndyGo's fixed-route and/or flexible transportation services. This role supports safe, reliable, and efficient transit operations by supervising Coach Operators, monitoring service delivery, resolving operational and customer service issues, and coordinating service adjustments with internal and external stakeholders.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

• Supervise and manage daily operation of the fixed route and flexible transportation systems and transit center, ensuring compliance with city, local, state and federal laws governing transit services.
• Ensure minimum variation in scheduled bus service and passenger safety by managing on-site street operations and computerized radio equipment and initiating communication with the city's police, safety and fire departments and local construction companies that might affect service.
• Resolve day-to-day operating problems that arise, including but are not limited to vehicle breakdowns, accidents and missed or late routes; makes appropriate decisions regarding restoring or maintaining service.
• Communicate service updates, schedule changes, and emergency notifications to internal and external stakeholders using clear, timely, and professional written and verbal communication.
• Investigate customer complaints and resolves passenger disputes related to provision of service.
• Monitor Bus Operators, riding the system to evaluate operator efficiency and maintain records of assigned operators.
• Work with the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) to develop training exercises and responds to real-time emergencies.
• Investigate accidents, including but not limited to scene of accident management, compiling information and executing company policy pertaining to post accident procedures.
• Provide detour planning expertise to city officials for special events.
• Conduct investigations as it relates to Coach Operators; provides support for grievance hearings, Loudermill hearings and terminations.

Other Functions:

• Make recommendations to management to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, and streamline work processes; work cooperatively to provide superior customer service.
• Supervise the Service Center and Radio Control Dispatch Room when required.
• Manage and respond to Transportation Department issues after normal business hours.
• Partner with Human Resources to ensure Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug & Alcohol Program compliance.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Supervise one or more employees.
• Apply supervisory responsibilities according to organizational policies, collective bargaining agreement and applicable laws.
• Interview, hire, and train employees; plan, schedule, assign, and direct work according to the current collective bargaining agreement; evaluates and manages employee performance; addresses complaints and resolves employee issues.

Education and/or Experience:

• High school diploma or GED required; Associate's degree in business administration or a related field preferred.
• A minimum of three (3) years of experience as a transit operator or equivalent fixed-route or paratransit operating experience.
• Three (3) to five (5) years of customer service experience and two (2) years of supervisory experience in scheduled transportation and/or dispatch operations preferred.
• Valid Indiana Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger and air brake endorsements required, or the ability to obtain the required license within six (6) months of hire.
• An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Knowledge of streets, landmarks and geography of Marion County and IPTC bus routes.
• Working knowledge of scheduling, dispatch, and workforce management software, or the demonstrated ability to learn specialized transit systems (e.g., scheduling, radio, and payroll platforms).
• Ability to operate laptops, tablets and two-way communication devices; including troubleshooting basic techniques.
• Ability to operate office equipment, including copiers, fax machines, and phones.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with individuals and groups using tact, patience, and professionalism, including when interacting with individuals who may be upset or frustrated.
• Above average decision-making abilities in a time sensitive environment.
• Basic mathematical abilities (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division).
• Ability to process and analyze data.
• Ability to track and control expenses and/or revenues.
• Ability to prioritize, organize, and manage tasks and time effectively.
• Ability to direct, influence, and motivate others.

Physical Demands:

• Regular on-site attendance is an essential function of this position due to the need for in-person collaboration, operational support, hands-on infrastructure management, and training and development activities. This role is designated as fully onsite and is not eligible for remote work.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
• Ability to move throughout facilities and transit locations as needed during the workday.
• Ability to communicate clearly and effectively in person and via radio or telephone.
• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions when required.
• Ability to respond to emergency situations and direct activity as necessary.
• Some local travel is required.
