Logistics Specialist

This recruitment will be used to fill a vacancy within the Police Department. All appointments to this position are subject to the successful completion of an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Rialto Police Department. DEFINITION

Under general supervision, performs a wide range of civilian logistical, inventory, fleet, and equipment support functions for the Police Department. This position is responsible for coordinating fleet maintenance schedules, managing department-wide inventory and issued equipment records, procuring supplies and equipment from approved vendors, and ensuring operational readiness through effective logistical planning and asset accountability.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

Under supervision, the individual in this class will serve as the central point of coordination between department personnel, vendors, fleet maintenance providers, and internal administrative units to ensure timely acquisition, tracking, maintenance, and replacement of departmental assets. Work requires independent judgment, organizational skill, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a law enforcement environment.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED

Receives direction from a sworn Police Officer or designated supervisor.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION STATEMENTS

1. Coordinate and monitor fleet maintenance schedules, inspections, repairs, and service records to ensure vehicle readiness and compliance.
2. Maintain detailed records of department vehicles, equipment supplies, and issued property.
3. Order, receive, inspect, and distribute supplies, uniforms, equipment and other materials.
4. Track and maintain inventory levels; conduct periodic audits and reconcile discrepancies.
5. Maintain equipment assignment records and ensure accountability for issued property.
6. Communicate with vendors regarding pricing, availability, delivery timelines, and order discrepancies.
7. Process purchase requests and maintain procurement documentation in accordance with department and municipal policies.
8. Assist in evaluating equipment life cycle needs and replacement planning.
9. Prepare reports related to fleet usage, inventory status, procurement activity, and asset management.
10. Provide logistical support during special events, emergency activations, or large-scale deployments.

Knowledge of Basic inventory management and asset tracking principles Fleet maintenance coordination practices, including preventive maintenance and vehicle lifecycle management Purchasing, procurement processes, and vendor relations Recordkeeping, database management, and documentation standards The basic operation of computers, including word processing, spreadsheet, and inventory management software Department policies, rules, regulations, and responsibilities Safety and regulatory compliance related to equipment handling, storage, and vehicle garages Logistical planning and coordination for departmental operations, special events, and emergency activations Report preparation, data analysis, and evaluation of inventory and fleet trends Property accountability procedures for issued equipment, uniforms, and department assets Emergency readiness and contingency planning for high-demand or critical situations Basic accounting principles related to budgeting, expenditures, and reconciliation Ability to Maintain accurate and detailed records Organize and prioritize multiple assignments at once Communicate effectively with vendors, department personnel, and other stakeholders Analyze inventory, fleet, and procurement needs and recommend solutions Exercise sound judgement, discretion, and maintain confidentiality in handling sensitive information Anticipate and solve logistical problems proactively, including emergency supply or fleet challenges Develop and implement effective inventory control and asset tracking strategies to optimize departmental resources Complete purchase orders, procurement documentation, and reporting within defined timelines Adapt and develop necessary skills through on-the-job training and meet performance standards by the end of the probationary period Experience and Training Guidelines Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain knowledge and abilities would be: Experience Two years of increasingly responsible non-sworn or sworn police program support experience. Education Verification of a High School diploma, a GED certificate, or a higher degree. Licenses, Certifications, and Other Requirements Verification of a valid California Driver's License Insurability by the City’s liability insurance carrier may be required Background Check Process All appointments to this position are subject to the successful completion of an in-depth background investigation conducted by the Rialto Police Department as well as a physical examination including a drug screening. The background investigation is a rigorous process.
