Security Officer (Flex Shift)

How You’ll Contribute The National Geographic Society headquarters, based in Washington, D.C., is undergoing a renovation project on its campus (Base Camp) that will be completed in 2026. The public‑facing portion of this renovation is the new National Geographic Museum of Exploration, which will include a pavilion entrance, auditorium, photo gallery, exhibition space, walk‑through attraction, retail, food and beverage, education center, archives, tours, event space, and a one‑of‑a‑kind nighttime courtyard experience. Responsibilities Observe and report safety concerns, security breaches, and unusual circumstances while performing self‑inspections of secure facilities, evaluate findings, and take corrective action. Respond to calls for emergency matters and perform rescue functions involving accidents, emergencies, and disasters. Maintain poise during high‑stress situations and handle them calmly and efficiently. Assume an initial command post and act as an on‑scene commander until a higher‑ranking official arrives. Stay on-site to assist the security team during emergencies and staff shortages until relieved by a supervisor. Operate and monitor security screening systems to ensure all individuals entering designated areas are screened appropriately, conduct secondary screening when alerts are triggered, and coordinate with supervisors for incident escalation. Minimum Education High school diploma. Minimum Experience Minimum 2 years of physical security experience. Military, law enforcement, and security experience in high‑traffic public venues or screening environments are preferred. Certifications and Experience Valid driver’s license and ability to be commissioned as an Unarmed Special Police Officer by the District of Columbia within one month of hire. Prior experience with access building control systems and familiarity with walk‑through metal detectors, handheld wands, or other screening technologies. Physical Demands Must be able to perform essential functions, including long periods of sitting, walking, standing, and climbing stairs. Must be able to stand for extended periods, especially during screening operations. Professional and Interpersonal Skills Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills; ability to deal with all levels of personnel and the general public. Conduct and Character Demonstrate integrity and ethical behavior, acting with honesty in all situations. The role requires self‑motivation and ownership of duties. Teamwork Must be a team player, respecting dynamics and collaborating effectively with colleagues. Supervision No direct reports. Salary and Benefits The hourly rate for this position is $21.60. Job Designation On‑site staff member who spends 100% of work time at Base Camp, supporting overall campus and museum operations. On‑site staff shifts are spread over seven days a week and 24 hours a day, including holidays. Shifts are scheduled by supervisors and determined by team needs and may be adjusted based on cyclical work cycles and ebbs and flows of work throughout the year.
