Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer

Under direction and supervision of the Division Captain and Public Safety Director, the position of Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer is responsible for a variety of duties pertaining to the maintenance of public safety within Franklin Township.

Essential functions include serving as a representative of Franklin Township, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with employees and the public. Other duties include serving as in-house personnel to Community Relations Bureau when officers are detailed out of the building, serving as courtroom security, participating in township sponsored community events, assisting with positive community engagement activities, assisting with the transport and maintenance of police vehicles, specialized equipment and supplies, assisting with prisoner transport, assisting with traffic duties, providing coverage for school crossing guards due to vacancies or absences, and other related duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, skills and abilities include the ability to read, write, speak and comprehend the English language proficiently, good moral character, high motivation, ability to work well with others in a collaborative team setting as well as the ability to effectively function individually, possession of excellent oral and written communication skills, ability to follow orders and make sound decisions, and ability to adhere to standard operating procedures and general orders of the department.

Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED equivalent, two years of relevant experience a plus, any combination of education and experience, valid NJ driver's license, current NJ PTC Class II Special Law Enforcement Officer certification, must be a United States citizen, must be a resident of New Jersey, retired police officers who separated from prior service in good standing, who are less than 65 years of age and who satisfy the other requirements of N.J.S.A. 40A:14-146 may apply.

Tools and equipment used include police car, police radio, handgun and other weapons as required, side handle baton, handcuffs, first aid equipment, computer.

Work environment includes work primarily performed in an indoor environment, but incumbents may occasionally be required to work in the field, employee is occasionally exposed to hazardous conditions, employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold and extreme heat, noise level in the work environment ranges from moderately quiet to loud.

Physical requirements include sitting, standing and walking; talking or hearing; using hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; tasting or smelling; lifting between 25 and 50 pounds and occasionally required to lift over 100 pounds.
