PE / Movement Teacher

We are seeking an energetic, creative, and highly engaged  PE / Movement Teacher to lead physical education and movement programming for students in our special education therapeutic facility.

This position is designed around the understanding that physical education is much more than running laps or playing traditional sports. Our students benefit from  movement, sensory input, gross-motor development, strength, coordination, teamwork, novelty, and opportunities to regulate their bodies throughout the school day.

Hours: Monday-Thursday: 8:30-3pm

Friday: 8:30-1pm

Pay: $30-$35 an hour DOE

Structure

The PE / Movement Teacher will run 30-minute small-group PE and movement sessions throughout the school day .

We will create a rotating daily and weekly schedule so that different portions of the day focus on different types of physical activity. The goal is to expose students to a wide variety of movement experiences while keeping PE engaging, structured, and developmentally appropriate.

The teacher will also  observe and support recess periods , helping students engage appropriately in physical play, learn new games, navigate peer interactions, and use movement productively.

PE & Movement Categories

Sports & Game Skills
Basketball, soccer, kickball, four square, floor hockey, volleyball, badminton, pickleball, Frisbee, cornhole, and other recreational or team sports. Students work on foundational skills, rules, sportsmanship, and participation.

Gross Motor, Coordination & Agility
Obstacle courses, Ninja Warrior-style courses, hurdles, balance activities, scooter boards, jump rope, hula hoops, animal walks, relay activities, hopping, skipping, crawling, climbing, and coordination challenges.

Strength, Fitness & Conditioning
Age-appropriate fitness circuits, squats, planks, jumping jacks, step-ups, medicine-ball activities, weighted carries, tug-of-war, body-weight exercises, and cardiovascular activities that build endurance without relying solely on running.

Cooperative Games & Social Movement
Capture the flag, parachute games, partner challenges, team relays, group obstacle courses, scavenger hunts, cooperative problem-solving activities, and games designed to develop communication, teamwork, flexibility, and sportsmanship.

Sensory Movement, Regulation & Body Awareness
Yoga, stretching, balance work, heavy-work activities, rhythmic movement, dance, movement breaks, and activities that help students recognize what their bodies need to become regulated and ready to learn.

The ideal candidate:

Is  active, enthusiastic, playful, patient, and comfortable thinking on their feet . They should enjoy working with children who learn and regulate differently and understand that successful PE in a special education environment may look different from traditional physical education.

Experience in  physical education, coaching, recreation, adaptive PE, special education, occupational therapy support, youth sports, or working with neurodivergent children is highly valued.

Above all, we are looking for someone who can make movement one of the most engaging parts of our students’ school day while helping them develop lifelong skills in  fitness, coordination, confidence, teamwork, self-regulation, and healthy movement.
