Athletic Trainer

Job Description Summary

This position assists Providers and additional clinical staff with orthopedic and musculoskeletal triaged patients. Provide patient evaluation and education, applies casts, maintains equipment, supplies, and procedure logs.

Responsibilities

• Obtain and record patient history, perform a physical exam, and order diagnostic tests after consultation with a physician or per protocol.
• Provide neurocognitive, BESS, and SCAT testing for concussion patients.
• Perform cast/brace application and removal under physician supervision; gather equipment, position patient, and follow physician instructions.
• Perform dressing changes, apply topical agents, change splints, and complete other orthopedic related medical tasks.
• Perform and document vital signs, record data in EMR, report to the physician, and assist with procedures as required.
• Schedule, coordinate, and record patient medical tests (X‑ray, lab work, pre‑admission tests); call in prescriptions per physician order.
• Support the physician in composing correspondence such as work and school excuses.
• Work collaboratively with the Practice Manager, Office Coordinator/Supervisor/Team Lead, physicians, and staff; provide support to the medical office staff as needed (telephone coverage, appointment scheduling, registration, managing room inventory).
• Provide on‑site home exercise instruction, splint/bracing instructions, crutch training, etc., in accordance with the Ohio Athletic Training Practice Act and OhioHealth protocols.
• Complete required medical documentation, statistics, and administrative paperwork per policy and at the supervisor’s request.
• Act as a liaison between patients and the medical team; communicate with patients, primary care physicians, specialists, and rehabilitation providers; assist with scheduling appointments; provide follow‑up after discharge.
• Maintain patient records, compile statistics, and prepare reports for management review.
• Attend required meetings and participate in committees; contribute to office and corporate quality improvement.
• Mentor and provide professional development for students (high school and college/university) in athletic training and healthcare per OhioHealth policy; act as an approved clinical instructor for campus athletics students.
• Participate on committees and for program development and evaluation to improve quality of care and advance OhioHealth Physician Group practices.

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree in Athletic Training or related field.
• Current license issued by the Ohio OTPTAT Board to practice Athletic Training; Board of Certification for Athletic Trainers certification.
• Maintained AT license in good standing.
• BLS certification (Basic Life Support) from American Heart Association.
• CPR certification for Healthcare Provider (BLS).
• Proficient with Microsoft Office, electronic medical records, and other clinical software.
• Willingness to travel to various locations and perform services at multiple sites.
• Ability to work with persons with disabilities.
• Strong verbal and written communication with physicians, patients, parents, administrators, and staff.
• Independent, self‑motivated, and proactive in seeking opportunities to advance patient care.
• Critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
• Flexibility to respond to changes in environment, schedule, and patient type.
• Discretion and security awareness to protect confidential information.

Desired Attributes

• Ability to present effectively to groups.
• Experience in sports medicine and/or orthopedic physician practice.
