Under general supervision of shop foreman or assistants, incumbent performs skilled craftsman level trades related duties in various types of heating / air conditioning and refrigeration work. Make routine repairs, answers trouble calls, analyze problems and execute action necessary to correct mechanical/electrical problems; participate in outages when one or more employee is needed to complete a task. Ensures that E.P.A. and other regulatory agency guidelines are followed. EPA Universal Certification required. Ensure there are no unauthorized gas leaks or releases. The incumbent will, on a rotating basis, be on call for one week and work a weekend shift. Incumbent is Considered Essential Personnel in a disaster. Performs related and non-related duties as required.

Job Description Summary

5%-Maintain work area and job site in clean and orderly manner and perform miscellaneous and related duties as required.

10%-Supervises and instructs mechanics of lower grade. Brief supervisor of any problems that may affect proper operation of equipment.

10%-Coordinates repairs and inspections with Energy Management Operator for proper shutdown and startup of air conditioning systems throughout campus.

15%-Overhauls compressors, condensers and other equipment as needed. Diagnose and repair equipment problems pertaining to air conditioning, heating and refrigeration. Uses proper tools and electrical meter.

25%-Recharges air conditioning systems with refrigerants as necessary. Reset air conditioning and refrigeration system and check for proper operation after power failure. Adjusts and calibrates pneumatic and electronics controls.

35%-Installs, repairs, and inspects HVAC/Refrigeration equipment and associated systems. This includes work on chillers, cooling towers, DX units, window units, ice machines, hot/cold rooms, motors, controls, pumps, etc for various sizes and types of HVAC systems. When working on equipment, ensures there is no unauthorized gas release into the atmosphere. Make installations, tests, and repairs in accordance with E.P.A. and other applicable regulatory guidelines.

Minimum Requirements: A high school diploma and three years trade experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Some positions require a commercial driver's license. Some positions require EPA-approved freon recovery certification.

Ability to push/pull equipment carts. Ability to maintain 20/40 vision, corrected. Ability to match or discriminate between colors. Good peripheral vision capabilities. Ability to maintain hearing acuity, with correction. Ability to operate winches, come-alongs, jacks, etc. Possess maintain dexterity in order to use hand tools, both manual and powered. Ability to qualify physically for respirator use. Additional New Requirements: Ability to obtain and maintain a valid drivers license. Ability to obtain and maintain EPA Approved Freon recovery certification.
