Assistant United States Attorney (Civil)

Summary The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is among the largest and busiest in the nation, spanning 43 counties and 44,000 square miles and representing 8.3 million people from the Houston area to the Mexico border. Responsibilities The Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Civil Division will litigate a broad range of cases involving significant, complex issues on behalf of the United States in federal court. Current assignments include land condemnation matters and related cases involving the border with Mexico, immigration enforcement matters, issuing warrants, defending asylum and passport cases, and general civil litigation. Responsibilities will increase and civil assignments may become more complex as your training and experience progress. Requirements You must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory preemployment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation. If you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959, you must certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System, or are exempt from having to do so under the Selective Service Law. You must hold a J.D. degree and be an active member of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction. You must reside in the district to which you are appointed or within 25 miles thereof. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Applicants must possess a J.D. degree, be an active member of the bar, and have at least 1 year of post-J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship is required. Preferred Qualifications: Strong academic credentials, superior legal research and writing skills, quick analytical ability to accurately articulate critical case-related issues, high-volume courtroom experience including first-chair jury trials, outstanding organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work in a supportive and professional team environment with other AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Successful candidates will be computer proficient, capable of doing their own legal research and writing, and self-sufficient in preparing day-to-day correspondence and pleadings. Salary Information Assistant United States Attorney pay is administratively determined based, in part, on the number of years of professional attorney experience. The range of pay for this position (including locality pay) is from $63,163 to $195,100. Travel and Relocation Average travel: 1 to 5 nights per month. Relocation expenses will not be authorized.
