Must-Have: Experience with adult psychiatric patients, including conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder

Description: Department: Psychiatric Unit has 26 beds. Nurse to patient ratios are 1:6-7 during the day and 1:8 at night. There are 5 Patient Care Technicians on days and evenings, reducing to 3 at night. Common diagnoses include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, schizoaffective disorder, substance abuse, and depression among adults aged 18 and older. Patients are medically stable; detox or rehabilitation patients are referred to specialized units. Charge Nurses are available 24/7, and travelers may be assigned to charge roles, managing a maximum of 5-6 patients. Physical restraint usage is highly discouraged, with a focus on de-escalation techniques. Registered Nurses may be expected to perform IM injections and phlebotomy, but IVs are not common on this unit. Patient Care Technicians are responsible for safety checks, vital signs, and assisting with activities of daily living. Respiratory Therapy is not available on-site; Registered Nurses will manage CPAP and BiPAP treatments and consult for patients needing continuous oxygen. There are no telemetry services; Registered Nurses will interpret cardiac strips as needed. Shift schedules are 7 AM to 7:30 PM for days and 7 PM to 7:30 AM for nights. Weekend commitment is required every other weekend, and participation in the holiday rotation may also be expected. Travelers must remain flexible with scheduling and are the first to float to other psychiatric units as needed. Scrub colors are assigned by role: Royal Blue for Registered Nurses, Kelly Green for LPNs, and Eggplant/Burgundy for Patient Care Technicians. Unit-specific orientation lasts between 2 to 4 days with a preceptor.
